Virginia's 51st House of Delegates district, in Prince William County, Virginia, elects one of the 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates, [1] the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature.
The 51st district has been represented by Democrat Briana Sewell since 2022. [2]

In December 2020, Briana Sewell [3] announced her intention to run for Delegate of District 51. She is endorsed by Hala Ayala, [4] the district's current delegate who is vacating the seat to run for Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, a move announced in July 2020. [5] She is also endorsed by U.S. Representative Gerry Connolly, with whom she has worked in the past. [6] Briana served as Chief of Staff to the Prince William County Chair At-Large, Ann Wheeler, and was previously the Political Director and Senior Organizer for the Virginia Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy. [7] According to her candidate website, [8] Briana earned her Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy from the College of William and Mary and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from American University. She is running as a Democrat. [9]
Republican Rich Anderson represented District 51 from 2010 to 2018. [10] In November 2017, he was defeated by Democrat Hala Ayala in an election where the Medicaid expansion figured significantly; Anderson opposed while Ayala supported the policy, which ultimately passed, making an additional 14,000 Prince William County residents eligible for the low-income health insurance program. Anderson declared his candidacy to challenge Ayala in 2019. [10]
Ayala retired to run for lieutenant governor she went on to lose the general election. She was succeeded by Briana Sewell to represent the district.
Winsome Sears is an American politician serving as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Virginia. A member of the Republican Party, Sears served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 to 2004. She also served on the Virginia Board of Education, and she ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia's 3rd congressional district in 2004 and for U.S. Senate in 2018. In 2021, Sears was elected lieutenant governor of Virginia.

Salam "Sam" Rasoul is an American politician serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 38th district. He is one of the two Muslim members of the Virginia General Assembly. In November 2020, Rasoul announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2021. Despite a significant fundraising advantage, Rasoul lost the Democratic primary to Hala Ayala by a large margin.
Richard L. Anderson is an American politician. From 2010 through 2018 he served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 51st district in the Prince William County suburbs of Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Republican Party. Anderson lost his reelection bid in Virginia's November 2017 election. Since 2020, Anderson serves as the Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia.

In 2023, she ran to represent Virginia's 29th Senate district, failing to unseat incumbent Jeremy McPike by only 50 votes.
Hala Sophia Ayala is an American politician who represented the 51st district in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2018 to 2022. She was the Democratic nominee in the 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election, losing to Republican nominee Winsome Sears on November 2, 2021. She was also a candidate for Virginia State Senate in the 33rd District, losing the Democratic primary to Jennifer Carroll Foy on June 20, 2023.

Briana D. Sewell is an American politician serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 25th district. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first elected in 2021 to succeed retiring Democrat Hala Ayala. Sewell represents parts of Prince William County, including the towns of Lake Ridge and Nokesville.
The 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election took place on November 7, 2023, concurrently with elections for the Virginia Senate, to elect members of the 163rd Virginia General Assembly. All 100 delegates were elected to two-year terms from single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. Democrats gained 3 seats, winning back control with a 51–49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021.

Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.

The primary elections are scheduled for June 18, 2024.
