Monte Cristi is a province in the northwest of the Dominican Republic. The capital city is San Fernando de Monte Cristi. The spelling Montecristi is also seen. The Montecristi province is located in the Cibao frontier region, on the north coast of the country and borders the nation of Haiti. The land area of the Montecristi province is 1,924.35 km2. It is divided into six municipalities and four municipal districts.

It is the capital of the Duarte Province and the sixth most populated city in the country in 2010. The name San Francisco de Macorís comes from a combination of the name of Saint Francis, patron saint of the Franciscan Order and the territory's old name, which is Macorix.

Cibao International Airport, also known as Santiago Airport, is located in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic's second-largest city. It is the country's third-busiest airport by passenger traffic and aircraft movements, after Punta Cana International Airport and Las Américas International Airport. Since its inauguration, in terms of passenger traffic, Cibao International has been projected to become one of the busiest airports in the country. Presently it has become the third-busiest airport in the Dominican Republic, only being surpassed by the airports of Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. The airport served more than 1,900,000 passengers in 2021.

The Miss Mundo Dominicana 2008 pageant was held on July 27, 2008. This year only 16 candidates were competing for the national crown. The chosen winner will represent the Dominican Republic at the Miss World 2008. The first runner up will represent the Dominican Republic in Miss America Latina 2009. Its national director, Belkys Reyes is a "Miss trainer" who has prepared models like Amelia Vega.
The Miss Mundo Dominicana 2004 pageant was held on October 10, 2004. That year, only 20 candidates competed for the national crown. The chosen winner, Claudia Cruz, represented the Dominican Republic at the Miss World 2004. The delegates used their introduction dresses to introduce themselves. After that, they each showcased their provincial costumes, participated in the swimsuit segment and modeled evening gowns. The judges averaged the points and selected a delegate who performed best from their region, awarding them a sash representing their region. The Top 6 candidates were then questioned. Three candidates who answered exceptionally well received votes from the audience and the judges combined, determining the winner based on the highest vote. The winner would go on to Miss World and become the First Runner Up. In this edition, there were three candidates for each Dominican Regions.
Sports are a central part of the culture of the Dominican Republic, and have been practiced in the whole country since the native inhabitants were living in the island. Sports play a key role in the culture and makeup of Dominican Republic society. Baseball is the most popular sport on the island country and Major League Baseball has been recruiting players from the Dominican Republic since the 1960s. Basketball, football, volleyball, and boxing are other sports played in the country.
