Critical reception

Jem Aswad of Variety praised the release for being part of Sault's history of innovative releases and characterizes different movements of the song as a "power-trio version of a Bob Marley song" followed by "a piano-led ballad... with a gorgeous soulful chorus" and ending in "a gentle acoustic song". [3] In Paste , Rosa Sofia Kaminski also notes the three-act structure and praises the release for having a "story is told so intimately that it feels like it happened to someone you know". [4]

Sault is a British music collective that make a mixture of R&B, urban contemporary gospel, house and disco. The project is helmed by songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Inflo, and consists of his protégés including vocalists Cleo Sol, Kid Sister, and Chronixx, as well as instrumentalists Kadeem Clarke, and Jack Peñate. The group frequently foregrounds Black-centric issues.

Blane Muise, better known by her stage name Shygirl, is an English rapper, DJ, singer, songwriter and co-head/founder of record label and collective Nuxxe. Shygirl's music incorporates elements of dance music, industrial hip-hop, experimental pop, grime and deconstructed club. She has also been associated with the hyperpop music scene. "Skate" is a song by American superduo Silk Sonic, which consists of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. It was released on July 30, 2021, by Aftermath Entertainment and Atlantic Records as the second single from their debut studio album An Evening with Silk Sonic (2021). The song was written by the artists alongside James Fauntleroy, Domi & JD Beck, and Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II, who produced it with Mars. An R&B, disco, and funk song, it was inspired by music from the 1970s disco period. The song's lyrics discuss roller skating and include an invitation to a dance floor.

"After Last Night" is a song by American superduo Silk Sonic, which consists of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, with Thundercat and Bootsy Collins, from their debut studio album, An Evening with Silk Sonic (2021). The song was written by Mars, .Paak, Thundercat, Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II, James Fauntleroy, Jonathan Yip, Ray Romulus, Jeremy Reeves, and Ray Charles McCollough II. The production was handled by Mars, D'Mile, Yip, Romulus, Reeves, and McCollough II, with the latter four credited as the Stereotypes. It was released to urban adult contemporary radio as the fifth single from the album in the United States on July 5, 2022, by Atlantic Records. The song is a funk, neo soul and R&B ballad, which is about a man who was a player changing his behavior for a woman with whom he is in love.

Emily Mahin Beihold is an American singer-songwriter. She released her debut EP Infrared in 2017. In 2020 she was noticed by music promotion brand Live2 LCC who subsequently teamed up with her to help promote music going forward. After signing to Republic Records and Moon Projects, she released her major-label debut single "Numb Little Bug" in 2022, which led her rise to fame. On July 22, 2022, Beihold released her second EP, Egg in the Backseat.
