A total of 14 teams qualified for the final tournament. In addition to Brazil, who qualified automatically as the hosts, another 13 teams qualified via four separate continental tournament.

The 1971 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A was the first official Brazilian football championship, and 15th edition overall of the Série A following the Taça Brasil and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa tournaments. Organized by the Brazilian Confederation of Sports (CBD), it was won by Atlético Mineiro.

The 1972 Copa Libertadores was the 13th edition of the Copa Libertadores, CONMEBOL's the annual club tournament. Independiente of Argentina defeated Universitario de Deportes of Peru in the finals, and became the second team in the tournament's history to win three title. The 1999 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships was the 63rd such event sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Teams representing 41 countries participated in several levels of competition. The competition also served as qualifications for group placements in the 2000 competition.

The 2008 Copa Libertadores de América was the 49th edition of the Copa Libertadores, CONMEBOL's premier annual international club tournament. This marked the first year the competition was sponsored by Spanish bank Santander. As such, the competition is officially the 2008 Copa Santander Libertadores de América for sponsorship reasons. The draw took place on December 19, 2007, in Asunción.

The 1975 Ice Hockey World Championships were the 42nd Ice Hockey World Championships and the 53rd European Championships of ice hockey. The tournament took place in West Germany from 3 to 19 April and the games were played in Munich and Düsseldorf. Six teams took part in the main tournament, each playing each other twice. The Soviet Union won all of their games, and became World Champions for the fourteenth time, and won their 17th European title.

Brazil sent a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, in August 2008. Brazilian athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games since 1920, except the 1928 Summer Olympics. The country is represented by the Brazilian Olympic Committee. Brazil headed to the Beijing Games with its largest Olympic delegation at the time, 277 athletes, including 132 women.

The qualification for 2000 Men's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was held from 12 June 1999 to 27 July 2000.

The 1977 Torneo Descentralizado, the top category of Peruvian football (soccer), was played by 16 teams. The national champion was Alianza Lima.

Brazil competed at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico from October 14 to 30, 2011. Bernard Rajzman will be the Chef de mission. Brazil's team consisted of 521 athletes in 32 sports.

The 2011 Pan American Women's Handball Championship was the eleventh edition of the Pan American Women's Handball Championship, held from 28 June to 2 July 2011, in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. The tournament also served as the qualification event for the 2011 World Women's Handball Championship, with the top three teams winning the right to participate on the World Championship. However, since Pan American Championship winners Brazil already qualified as the host nation, fourth placed Uruguay was awarded the third spot, that was reserved for the zone.

The women's tournament of volleyball at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico began on October 15 and ended on October 20, when the Brazil defeated Cuba 3–2 for the gold medal. all games were held at the Pan American Volleyball Complex. The defending champions are Cuba.

Brazil competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom, from 29 August to 9 September 2012. Brazil was the next host of the Summer Paralympics, holding the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. A Brazilian segment was performed in Closing Ceremony.

The qualification for the 2016 Men's Olympic Handball Tournament was held from January 2015 to April 2016. Twelve teams qualified, the hosts, the world champion, four continental event winners and six teams from the World Olympic qualification tournaments respectively.

Twelve teams qualified, the hosts, the FIVB World Cup champion and runner-up, five continental Olympic qualification tournament champions, and four teams from the World Olympic qualification tournament respectively. Teams already qualified for the event were not eligible to play in the following qualification tournaments.

The women's handball tournament at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada was held at the Exhibition Centre from July 16 to 24.

The 1981 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship was held in Mexico City, Mexico from October 16 to 26, 1981. 15 teams participated in the tournament.

The 1985 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship was held in many Italian cities from September 12 to 22, 1985. 15 teams participated in the tournament.

The 2025 Rugby League World Cup qualification is the qualifying process which will decide the seven teams that would join the eight quarter-finalists from the 2021 World Cup and hosts France, who received an automatic spot, at the 2025 Rugby League World Cup. The process commenced in 2021, with the 2021 Rugby League European Championship D, which acted as the preliminary round for European qualification.
