The 1984 NCAA Rifle Championships were contested at the fifth annual tournament to determine the team and individual national champions of NCAA co-ed collegiate rifle shooting in the United States. The championship was held at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. [1]

Murray State University (MSU) is a public university in Murray, Kentucky. In addition to the main campus in Calloway County in southwestern Kentucky, Murray State operates extended campuses offering upper level and graduate courses in Paducah, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, and Henderson.

West Virginia, with a team score of 6,206, won their second consecutive, and second overall, team title, finishing 64 points ahead of East Tennessee State. The Mountaineers were coached by Olympian Edward Etzel.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers are the sixteen sports teams representing East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City, Tennessee in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field; women's-only softball and volleyball; and men's-only baseball and football. The Buccaneers compete in the NCAA Division I and are currently members of the Southern Conference.
Edward Fredrick "Ed" Etzel, Jr. is a sports shooter and Olympic Champion for the United States. He won a gold medal in the 50 metre rifle prone event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
The individual champions were, for the smallbore rifle, Bob Broughton (West Virginia) and, for the air rifle, Pat Spurgin (Murray State).
Karen Patricia "Pat" Spurgin is an American sports shooter, now living in Fairbanks, Alaska. Born in Billings, Montana, she competed and won a gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics. She became the first Olympic Champion in Air Rifle for Women, at the time being an 18-year-old student at Murray State University, Kentucky.
