The 1985 Sun Belt Conference women's basketball tournament was the postseason women's basketball tournament for the Sun Belt Conference beginning on March 7, 1985, and ending on March 9, 1985, in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S. at the Old Dominion University Fieldhouse.

Top-seeded Old Dominion defeated Western Kentucky in the championship game, 76–63, to win their third Sun Belt women's basketball tournament. [1]

The Lady Monarchs received an automatic bid to the 1985 NCAA tournament. They were joined by conference runner-up Western Kentucky, who received an at-large bid. [2]

Old Dominion went on to win the NCAA tournament 70–65 against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs. [3] Western Kentucky made it to the Final Four, but lost to Georgia 78–91.

Format

First-seeded Old Dominion received a bye from the first round. The winner of the third and fifth seed game would play Old Dominion the following day. The remaining conference members were placed into the initial round. Each team was seeded based on its regular season conference record.

The 2020–21 North Texas Mean Green men's basketball team represented the University of North Texas during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by fifth-year head coach Grant McCasland, and played their home games at UNT Coliseum in Denton, Texas as a member of the West division of Conference USA. In a season limited due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they finished the season 18–10, 9–5 to finish in third place in the division. They defeated Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Louisiana Tech, and Western Kentucky to win the C-USA tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 13 seed in the South region. There they upset No. 4-seeded Purdue in the first round for the school’s first ever NCAA tournament victory, before losing to No. 5-seeded Villanova in the second round.

The 1984–85 Old Dominion Monarchs men's basketball team represented Old Dominion University in the 1984–85 college basketball season. This was head coach Paul Webb's 10th and final season at Old Dominion. The Monarchs compete in the Sun Belt Conference and played their home games at the ODU Fieldhouse. They finished the season 19–12, 9–5 in Sun Belt play to finish in third place during the regular season. They reached the championship game of the 1985 Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. As No. 12 seed in the East Region where they were beaten by 5 seed SMU in the opening round.
