The Algerian Football Federation (AFF); is the governing body of football in Algeria. Formed in 1962 and was based in the capital Algiers. It has jurisdiction on the Algerian football league system and is in charge of the men's and women's national teams. Although an unofficial national team had played fixtures since 1958, the first recognized international took place in January 1963, some six months after independence. The 9th All-Africa Games took place from 11 to 23 July 2007 in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria. Algiers became the first city to hold All-Africa Games for a second time. The 1978 All-Africa Games were also held there. Besides Algeria, only Nigeria had hosted the event twice, but with different host cities. 4,793 athletes from 52 nations took part in the 2007 Games.

The team was particularly successful in athletics, winning five gold medals in track and field events as well as beating the continental record in the T46 200 metres sprint.

The 2017 Men's U23 African Volleyball Championship was the 2nd edition of the Men's U23 African Volleyball Championship, it was held in Algiers, Algeria from 20 to 22 February 2017. The winners Algeria qualified for the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Men's U23 World Championship.

The 2014 Women's U23 African Volleyball Championship was the 1st edition of the Women's U23 African Volleyball Championship, it was held 7 to 9 September 2014 in Algiers, Algeria. It was the inaugural edition of the tournament. The tournament was organized by the African Volleyball Confederation, in association with Algerian Volleyball Federation.
