Western Asia, also called West Asia or Southwest Asia, is the westernmost region of Asia, as defined by some academics, UN bodies and other institutions, and includes Anatolia, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Mesopotamia, the Armenian Highlands, the Levant, the island of Cyprus, the Sinai Peninsula, and partly the Caucasus Region (Transcaucasia). The region is considered to be separated from Africa by the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt, and separated from Europe by the waterways of the Turkish Straits and the watershed of the Greater Caucasus. Central Asia lies to its northeast, while South Asia lies to its east. Twelve seas surround the region (clockwise): the Aegean Sea, the Sea of Marmara, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba, the Gulf of Suez, and the Mediterranean Sea. The area contains the vast majority of the similarly defined Middle East, except excluding the African part of Egypt, and including the southern part of the Caucasus.
Basketball at the 1948 Summer Olympics was the second appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. A total number of 23 nations entered the competition.
The 7th Asian Games were held from 1 to 16 September 1974 in Tehran, Imperial State of Iran. The Aryamehr Sports Complex was built for the Games. The Asian Games were hosted in the Middle East for the first time. Tehran, the capital of Iran, played host to 3,010 athletes coming from 25 countries/NOCs, the highest number of participants since the inception of the Games.
Slavko Vraneš is a Montenegrin former professional basketball player. He also represented the Montenegrin national basketball team in the international competitions. Standing at 2.29 m, he was one of the tallest players in the world.
The FIBA Asia Cup is an international basketball tournament which takes place every four years between the men's national teams of Asia and Oceania.

Hamed Ehdadi Haddadi is an Iranian professional basketball player for Sichuan Blue Whales of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He plays at the center position and is 7'2" tall and weighs 254 lbs. Haddadi was the first Iranian to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA) when he debuted with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2008. He played with the Grizzlies until 2013 before bouncing around the league with the Toronto Raptors and the Phoenix Suns. In 2013, he returned home to Iran before playing in China. Haddadi is regarded as the greatest Iranian basketball player of all time.
The Iranian Basketball Super League (IBSL) is a professional men's basketball league in Iran. It was founded in 1998. The current champions is Shahrdari Gorgan. The league follows the promotion and relegation system in which the worst two teams are relegated to 1st Division.
Gol Gohar Sirjan Football Club is an Iranian football club based in Sirjan, Iran. They currently compete in the Persian Gulf Pro League.
Mahram Tehran Basketball Club is an Iranian professional basketball club based in Tehran, Iran. They compete in the Iranian Basketball Super League. Mahram is considered one of the giants of Iranian Basketball and were Champions of Asia in 2009 and 2010. Mahram has won the Iranian Basketball Super League championship a total of six times.
Petrochimi Bandar Imam Basketball Club, also known as shortly Petrochimi, is an Iranian professional basketball club based in Mahshahr, Iran. They compete in the Iranian Basketball Super League. In 2012 they became the first club in Iran to establish a basketball youth academy.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Basketball Federation(I.R.I.B.F.) is the governing body for basketball in Iran. It was founded in 1945, and has been a member of FIBA since 1947. It is also a member of the FIBA Asia. The IRIBF is responsible for organizing the Iran national basketball team.
Javad Davari is president of Islamic Republic of Iran Basketball Federation from February 2022. He was former Iranian professional basketball player, played as a point guard for Foolad Mahan in the Iranian Basketball Super League. He is also a member of the Iranian national basketball team and competed at the 2008 Olympic Basketball Tournament. Davari previously played for Zob Ahan before joining Petrochimi.

The Iran Men's National Wheelchair Basketball Team is the wheelchair basketball side that represents Iran in international competitions for men as part of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation.
Rui Hachimura is a Japanese professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Gonzaga Bulldogs and has played for the Japan national team. He plays both the small forward and power forward positions. After being selected ninth overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2019 NBA draft, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2020.
The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification for the FIBA Asia-Oceania region began in November 2017 and concluded in February 2019. The process determined the seven teams that would join the automatically qualified hosts China at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Iran competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan, from 24 August to 5 September 2021. This was their ninth consecutive appearance at the Summer Paralympics since 1988.
