The 2012 Women's Premier League Rugby season was the fourth season of the Women's Premier League in the United States. It began on September 8 and involved eight teams.

Format

The Minnesota Valkyries were relegated in the off-season and the Glendale Raptors had their first year as a part of the WPL. The eight teams were divided into two conferences, Red and Blue, comprising four teams. They each played six conference games, one home and one away. The WPL season occurred in the fall, concurrently with the regular women's club season, with the National Championship being held in November 9–11.

For the Finals, teams were seeded based on the results of their conference during the regular season. The top four teams competed for the Cup and the bottom teams for the Bowl.

Division 1-A Rugby

Division 1-A Rugby is the highest level of college rugby within the United States and is administered by USA Rugby. Division 1-A rugby is modeled after NCAA athletic competitions, with the 67 D1-A rugby schools divided into eight conferences: East, Mid-South, Rocky Mountain, California, Big Ten, Liberty, Red River, and PAC.

San Diego Surfers Rugby team

The San Diego Surfers Women's Rugby Club is a women's rugby union club based in San Diego, California. They were founded in 1975 as an amateur club and have been members of the Women's Premier League Rugby (WPL) since 2011, when the team earned promotion from Division I. The Surfers field three teams throughout the year, one each in the WPL, Division I, and in Sevens.

Jan Rutkowski is a former American rugby union player. She was part of the United States team that won the inaugural 1991 Women's Rugby World Cup. She was also in the 1994 squad that were runners-up to England.
