The Hockey East Association, also known as Hockey East, is a college ice hockey conference which operates entirely in New England. It participates in the NCAA's Division I as a hockey-only conference.
The Broadview Center, formerly known as the SEFCU Arena, is a 3,800-seat multi-purpose arena in Guilderland, New York. It is home to the University at Albany men's and women's Great Danes basketball teams. The arena additionally hosted the 2009 America East men's basketball tournament, and is also a venue for the university's graduate commencement ceremonies. It can also can be formatted as a concert venue or to accommodate trade shows and conventions.

The Albany Great Danes men's basketball team is the basketball team that represent the University at Albany, State University of New York in Albany, New York. They were coached by eighth year head coach Steve Pikiell and played their home games at Pritchard Gymnasium. They were members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 25–8, 14–2 in America East play to become America East regular season champions. They advanced to the semifinals of the America East tournament where they lost to Albany. As a regular season conference champion who failed to win their conference tournament, they received an automatic bid to the 2013 NIT. The Seawolves defeated Massachusetts in the first round for their first ever postseason tournament victory in school history. They lost in the second round to Iowa.

The 2018 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament began on March 16, 2018, and concluded with the national championship game on Sunday, April 1. The Final Four was played at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. This is the third time that the women's Final Four was played in Ohio after previously being held in Cincinnati in 1997 and Cleveland in 2007 and the first time that the women's Final Four was played in Columbus. For only the fourth time in the tournament’s 37-year history, all four of the number one seeds made it to the Final Four.

The quarterfinals and semifinals were held at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME, with the finals being held at the SEFCU Arena in Albany, NY. Albany won their 6th straight American East tournament title to earn an automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA tournament.
