In 2016 Shelbourne F.C. are competing in the League of Ireland First Division for the third successive season following two failed attempts at promotion having finished fourth in the previous season. This season is currently commencing. Kevin Doherty continued on as manager for the second consecutive season. The squad had been significantly renewed over the previous season after many transfers were brought in. Doherty stepped down on mutual grounds with the club in June before former Shelbourne captain Owen Heary took over as the new manager.

The division was formed in 1985. It replaced the League of Ireland B Division as the League of Ireland's second level division. Since 2003 the First Division has operated as a summer league.

Shelbourne F.C. have a long, illustrious history in European competitions, taking on teams such as Sporting Portugal, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Panathinaikos, Rangers, Rosenborg, Brøndby, Hajduk Split, Deportivo de La Coruña, Lille, and Steaua Bucharest.

The 1992–93 League of Ireland Premier Division was the 8th season of the League of Ireland Premier Division. The division was made up of 12 teams. With a team that included Phil Harrington, John Caulfield, Pat Morley, Paul Bannon, Gerry McCabe and Dave Barry, manager Noel O'Mahony guided Cork City to their first Premier Division title after a series of three-way play-offs that also involved Bohemians and Shelbourne.

In the 2004 season, Shelbourne were crowned League of Ireland Premier Division champions.

2010 A Championship

The 2010 A Championship was the third season of the A Championship. The season was sponsored by Newstalk. The league featured 18 teams. UCD A were the champions, winning the title for a second time while Bohemians A finished as runners up.

In 2015 Shelbourne F.C. are competing in the League of Ireland First Division for the second successive season following failed attempt at promotion having been knocked out in the promotion play-off's the previous season. Philip Hughes returned to the club after a loan-spell at Drogheda United F.C. and the club saw new management under former football player Kevin Doherty after Johnny McDonnell left the side prior to the start of the season.

Kevin Doherty is an Irish association football coach and former professional player, who was the manager of League of Ireland First Division club Shelbourne from December 2014 until June 2016. As a player Doherty was a powerful centre back, who was named Football Association of Ireland (FAI) School's International Player of the Year in 1998. He was transferred from Home Farm Everton to Liverpool FC in the same year and played for the Premier League club's youth and reserve teams, as well as for the Republic of Ireland under-18 team. A broken femur suffered at the end of his first season with Liverpool was the first of several injuries which beset Doherty throughout his playing career.

The 2007 League of Ireland First Division season was the 23rd season of the League of Ireland First Division. The First Division was contested by 10 teams and Cobh Ramblers won the division. Finn Harps were also promoted to the Premier Division after a play-off and Wexford Youths made their League of Ireland debut.

The 2010 League of Ireland First Division season was the 26th season of the League of Ireland First Division. The First Division was contested by 12 teams and Derry City won the title.

The 2014 League of Ireland First Division season was the 30th season of the League of Ireland First Division. The First Division was contested by eight teams and Longford Town won the title. Galway were also promoted.

In 2017 Shelbourne F.C. competed in the League of Ireland First Division for the fourth consecutive season under the management of former Shelbourne captain Owen Heary. The season saw Shelbourne finish fourth place.

The 2018 League of Ireland First Division season is the 34th season of the League of Ireland First Division. The league began on 23 February 2018 and will conclude in October 2018. Contrary to the previous editions, this tournament will have 10 teams, which is the largest number since 2011 season, and will return the promotion/relegation playoffs.

Dundalk entered the 2017 season as the reigning League Champions from 2016, having won the title for the third year in a row, and having come off a successful Europa League run that saw them become the first Irish club to both win points and win a match in the group stage of European competition. 2017 was Stephen Kenny's fifth season at the club as manager. It was Dundalk's ninth consecutive season in the top tier of Irish football, their 82nd in all, and their 91st in the League of Ireland.

2015 Dundalk F.C. season

Dundalk entered the 2015 season as the reigning League Champions from 2014, having won the title for the first time since 1995, and were also the League Cup holders. 2015 was Stephen Kenny's third season at the club as manager. It was Dundalk's seventh consecutive season in the top tier of Irish football, their 80th in all, and their 89th in the League of Ireland.

Dundalk entered the 2013 season having spent the 2012 season rooted in the relegation play-off spot. The club had been put up for sale, and, with the assistance of a Supporters Trust, it was taken over by local businessmen Andy Connolly and Paul Brown. They subsequently managed to remain in the top-flight by winning a promotion/relegation play-off.. With the takeover complete and the club saved, the new owners turned to Stephen Kenny - out of work since being sacked by Shamrock Rovers - to become the new manager ahead of the season. 2013 was Dundalk's fifth consecutive season in the top tier of Irish football, their 78th in all, and their 87th in the League of Ireland.
