The 2016 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was a single-elimination tournament of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that did not participate in the 2016 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament or 2016 Women's National Invitation Tournament.

The 2016 field was announced Monday, March 14. All games were hosted by the higher seed throughout the tournament, unless the higher seed's arena was unavailable. First round WBI games were held March 16 and 17 while second-round games were held March 19 and March 20. The tournament semifinals were held March 23 with the 2016 WBI Championship game played on March 26. [1] The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns defeated the Weber State Wildcats in double-overtime, winning the WBI for the second consecutive season. [2]

The 2017 field was announced on March 13. First round WBI games took place on March 15 and 16; second-round games were played March 18 and March 19. The tournament semifinals were held March 23 with the 2017 WBI Championship game played the final weekend of March. Rice won the WBI for the first time ever, beating UNC Greensboro, 74–62.

The 2018 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was a single-elimination tournament consisting of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that did not participate in the 2018 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2018 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2018 field was announced on March 13. First round WBI games occurred on March 14 and 15; second-round games were played on March 19 and 20. The tournament semifinals were held March 23 and 24, and the 2018 WBI Championship game was held on March 29. Yale defeated Central Arkansas, 54–50, to become WBI champions.

The 2015–16 Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team represented the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Ragin' Cajuns were led by fourth-year head coach Garry Brodhead and played all their home games at the Cajundome with a select few at Earl K. Long Gymnasium, which is located on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus. They were members in the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 25-10, 13–7 in Sun Belt play to finish in third place. They advanced to the semifinal game of the Sun Belt women's tournament where they lost to Little Rock by the score of 52-63. They competed in the Women's Basketball Invitational and went to the championship game, winning by the score of 87-85 in two overtimes against the Weber State Wildcats

The 2019 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was a single-elimination tournament consisting of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that did not participate in the 2019 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2019 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2019 field was announced on March 18. First round WBI games took place on March 20 and 21; second-round games were played on March 25 and 26. The tournament semifinals were held March 29 and 30, and the 2019 WBI Championship game was held on April 3. Appalachian State defeated North Texas to win their second WBI championship.

The 2020 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was to be a single-elimination tournament consisting of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that would not participate in the 2020 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2020 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2020 field was to be announced on March 16. First round WBI games were to occur on March 18 and 19; second-round games were to be played on March 22 and 23. The tournament semifinals were to be held March 27 and 28, and the 2019 WBI Championship game was to be held on March 31 or April 1.
