The Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) is a women's college basketball tournament created in 2009 by Sport Tours. The inaugural tournament occurred at the conclusion of the 2009–10 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. Selections for the WBI are announced on Selection Monday. Prior to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic the field for the WBI consisted of a 16-team, single elimination divided into two regions with 8 seeded teams in each. The current format consists of 8 teams, all of which are guraranteed 3 games. Teams are picked based on NET, record, conference standings, end of year performance, and quality wins and losses, after the NCAA and WNIT fields are filled.

The Thundering Herd, led by second year head coach Tony Kemper, played their home games at the Cam Henderson Center and were members of Conference USA. They finished the season 17–15, 10–6 in C-USA play to finish in a tie for fifth place. They lost in the first round of the C-USA women's tournament to UTEP. They received an invitation to the WBI where they defeated Davidson in the first round before losing to Appalachian State in the quarterfinals.

The Mean Green, led by fourth year head coach Jalie Mitchell, play their home games UNT Coliseum, also known as The Super Pit, and were members of Conference USA. They finished the season 18–16, 7–9 in C-USA play to finish in ninth place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the C-USA women's tournament where they lost to Rice. They received an invitation of the WBI where they defeated Texas–Rio Grande Valley, Utah State and North Alabama in the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals to advanced to the championship game where they lost Appalachian State.
The 2015–16 Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team represented the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Ragin' Cajuns were led by fourth-year head coach Garry Brodhead and played all their home games at the Cajundome with a select few at Earl K. Long Gymnasium, which is located on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus. They were members in the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 25-10, 13–7 in Sun Belt play to finish in third place. They advanced to the semifinal game of the Sun Belt women's tournament where they lost to Little Rock by the score of 52-63. They competed in the Women's Basketball Invitational and went to the championship game, winning by the score of 87-85 in two overtimes against the Weber State Wildcats

The 2020 field was to be announced on March 16. First round WBI games were to occur on March 18 and 19; second-round games were to be played on March 22 and 23. The tournament semifinals were to be held March 27 and 28, and the 2019 WBI Championship game was to be held on March 31 or April 1.
The 2021 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was a single-elimination tournament consisting of eight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that were not selected to participate in the 2021 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2021 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2021 field was announced on March 15. The tournament was held March 19–21 at the William Exum Center on the campus of Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky. The format was an 8-team tournament with a winners and consolation bracket, guaranteeing all participating teams three games. Cleveland State beat Portland in the final.
