The 2020 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) was to be a single-elimination tournament consisting of 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams that would not participate in the 2020 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament or 2020 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The 2020 field was to be announced on March 16. First round WBI games were to occur on March 18 and 19; second-round games were to be played on March 22 and 23. The tournament semifinals were to be held March 27 and 28, and the 2019 WBI Championship game was to be held on March 31 or April 1. [1]
On March 12, 2020, NCAA officials canceled all tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2]
The Detroit Mercy Titans are the athletic teams of University of Detroit Mercy. The university is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. The school primarily competes in the Horizon League, but competes in other conferences for fencing and lacrosse, sports not sponsored for either men or women by the Horizon League. Fencing, a co-ed sport, competes in the Midwest Fencing Conference. Men's lacrosse moved from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to the ASUN Conference in July 2021. Women's lacrosse joined the Mid-American Conference for that league's first women's lacrosse season in 2021.

The Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) is a women's college basketball tournament created in 2009 by Sport Tours. The inaugural tournament occurred at the conclusion of the 2009–10 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. Selections for the WBI are announced on Selection Monday. Prior to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic the field for the WBI consisted of a 16-team, single elimination divided into two regions with 8 seeded teams in each. The current format consists of 8 teams, all of which are guraranteed 3 games. Teams are picked based on NET, record, conference standings, end of year performance, and quality wins and losses, after the NCAA and WNIT fields are filled.

All games were hosted by the higher seed throughout the tournament, unless the higher seed's arena was unavailable. The championship game was hosted by the school with the higher end of the season RPI. The UAB Blazers defeated the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners in the final.

The Texas–Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's basketball team is the intercollegiate women's basketball program representing the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The school competes in the Western Athletic Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Vaqueros play home basketball games at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on the university campus in Edinburg, Texas.

The tournament semifinals were held March 23 with the 2017 WBI Championship game played the final weekend of March. Rice won the WBI for the first time ever, beating UNC Greensboro, 74–62.

The format was an 8-team tournament with a winners and consolation bracket, guaranteeing all participating teams three games. Cleveland State beat Portland in the final.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption to basketball across the world, mirroring its impact across all sports. Across the world and to varying degrees, events and competitions have been cancelled or postponed with limited or no spectators, and other restrictions in 2020 and 2021. The National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended its 2019–20 season due to one player testing positive from COVID-19, and began to resume the season later in 2020.
