2nd Military Region (Algeria)

The 2nd Military Region is a military region of the Algerian People's National Armed Forces. Its headquarters is at Oran.

Up until the early 1990s, most of the field units of the armed forces were stationed in the 2nd and the 3rd Military Regions. [2] The 8th Armoured Division is based at Ras El Ma, 90 kilometres from Sidi Bel Abbes, [3] in the 2nd Military Region.

Previous commanders have included Chadli Bendjedid (1964–78) [4] and Kamal Abderrahim. While commanding the region, Benjedid supervised the withdrawal of French forces from Mers el Kebir in accordance with the Evian Accords.

The Algerian Land Forces are the land forces of the Algerian People's National Army. The forces' equipment is mostly supplied by Russia and China.

The 3rd Rifle Division was an infantry division of the Soviet Army. It was formed in 1921 in Crimea. The division relocated to Svobodny in the Far East during 1939 and moved to Blagoveshchensk soon after. The division fought in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and was disbanded in 1946.

The Cuban Revolutionary Army serve as the ground forces of Cuba. Formed in 1868 during the Ten Years' War, it was originally known as the Cuban Constitutional Army. Following the Cuban Revolution, the revolutionary military forces was reconstituted as the national army of Cuba by Fidel Castro in 1960. The army is a part of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces which was founded around that time.

El Mouradia Palace is the office and residence of the President of Algeria. It is located in the neighborhood of El Mouradia on the hills overlooking Algiers. "El Mouradia" is also widely used as shorthand for the Algerian President's office.
