AAGPS (NSW) Athletics

The NSW AAGPS (Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools) Athletics is one of the premier Athletics events in Australia. It is an annual event competed in between 9 member teams that include Saint Ignatius Riverview, St Joseph's Hunters Hill, Sydney Grammar, Sydney Boys High, Newington College, Scots College, The King's School, Sydney Church Of England (Shore), and The Armidale School.

Contents

The Event takes place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre and attracts crowds up to 15,000 people. It is regarded as one of the largest Athletics meets in the Southern Hemisphere

History

The official athletics competition commenced in 1892. In 1912 the competition was divided into two levels – Senior and Junior. In 2012 a third level, intermediate, was added.

The Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools of New South Wales (AAGPS) is a sporting association of boys' schools in New South Wales, Australia that contest sporting events among themselves. The CARIFTA Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA). The 34th CARIFTA Games was held in the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago on March 26–28, 2005. The event was relocated from the National Stadium, St. George's, Grenada, because of the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan destroying 90 percent of the island's houses. The South American U18 Championships in Athletics is a biennial athletics event organized by "Confederación Sudamericana de Atletismo" (CONSUDATLE), the South American area association of the World Athletics (IAAF). Starting in 1973, the competition was open for athletes under-17 in the early years. Since 2000 the international age group definition has applied. Up until the 2016 edition the competition was known as the South American Youth Championships in Athletics. The tournament is open for athletes from CONSUDATLE member federations. Athletes from IAAF members of other geographical areas may be invited. However, they are not considered in the classification.

This is an annual rugby union competition played by teams from Sydney, Australia based boys high schools who are members of the AAGPS.

The NSW AAGPS is a school basketball competition played in Australia. It is an annual, 14 round competition played between 8 Sydney member teams that include Saint Ignatius Riverview, St Joseph's Hunters Hill, Sydney Grammar, Sydney Boys High, Newington College, Scots College, The Kings school and Sydney Church Of England Grammar School (Shore). Preseason games are played in Term 3-4 school holidays in the Knox Invitational tournament and Rashke Cup aswell as the Trinity Challenge in Summer, with the official GPS games played in Term 4 and 1 on Saturday. 1st grade games commence at 11:15 and often attract large game, whilst second grade games commence at 10:00. The 1st grade premiership is currently held by Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore) while the Rashcke cup is held by Newington College. In 2nd grade the premiership is held by St Ignatius College, Riverview while the PJ Yeend Trophy is currently held by Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore).

Athletics is one of several sports contested at the quadrennial Commonwealth Youth Games. It has featured at every edition of the competition since its inauguration in 2000. Athletes under nineteen years old may compete.

The Mixed 8x100m relay competition at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games was held on 26 August 2014 in Nanjing Olympic Sports Center. The competitors were divided in 67 teams composed of mixed athletes from different NOCs, gender and disciplines aiming to be balanced in strength. In the preparation phase there are ten athletes in competition phases there are 8 athletes.
