In an effort to enhance the infrastructure for tertiary healthcare, the state of Karnataka has long called for the creation of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), especially in Raichur.
In a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on January 14, 2025, Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda said that the proposal for an AIIMS in the state will be considered within the broader distribution of health funds, including the National Health Mission (NHM) and other significant health initiatives.
This strategy was deemed unsatisfactory by the Karnataka State Health Department. State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that AIIMS needs a distinct, dedicated budget and that the current funds are already set aside for current needs.
