The AN/UYA-4 is a series of system consoles developed by Hughes Aircraft Company for the United States Navy. [1]

Description

The Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) was originally developed to organize anti-aircraft warfare, but in the mid-1960s, it began to be considered for use in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) as well, and the ASWSC&CS (ASW Ship Command and Control System) project was initiated. [2] As part of this project, a console with greater versatility than the SYA-4 used by the early NTDS was required. [2] The UYA-4 was developed in response and was designed around 1965. [1] [2]

The UYA-4 series was the first NTDS display subsystem to employ electronic circuits as integrated circuits instead of individual components such as transistors, resistors, and diodes. [2] The basic model is the OJ-194/UYA-4, which has a 12-inch plan position indicator, six buttons with fixed functions, and 18 variable-action buttons (VABs), allowing switching between 45 operational modes. [1]

This series also included table type consoles (operations summary console, OSC) with a large 20-inch PPI scope arranged horizontally so that the screen could be viewed from three sides: [2] initially the OA-7981 and later the OJ-195 and 197 were used. [1]

In addition, the OA-7980 was also included to process information about the altitude of targets by obtaining information from 3D radar and other sources. [1]

However, the functions of this series were basically limited to operation and display, and information processing was performed by mainframe computers such as the CP-642 and AN/UYK-7. The OJ-197/UYA-4 in particular was expensive to maintain and manage, and was gradually replaced in succeeding systems by the AN/UYQ-70, capable of processing information on its own. [1]

The FRAM program also covered cruisers, aircraft carriers, submarines, amphibious ships, and auxiliaries. The United States Coast Guard also used this term in the 1980s for the modernization of its Hamilton-class cutters.

Sumner class, whereby the hull was lengthened by 14 ft (4.3 m) at amidships, which resulted in more fuel storage space and increased the operating range.

The Allen M. Sumner class was a group of 58 destroyers built by the United States during World War II. Another twelve ships were completed as destroyer minelayers. The class was named for Allen Melancthon Sumner, an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Often referred to as simply the Sumner, this class was distinguished from the previous Fletcher class by their twin 5-inch/38 caliber gun mounts, dual rudders, additional anti-aircraft weapons, and many other advancements. The Allen M. Sumner design was extended 14 feet (4.3 m) amidships to become the Gearing class, which was produced in larger numbers but did not see significant service in World War II.

Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) was a computerized information processing system developed by the United States Navy in the 1950s and first deployed in the early 1960s for use in combat ships. It took reports from multiple sensors on different ships and collated it to produce a single unified map of the battlespace. This information could then be relayed back to the ships and to the weapons operators.

The AN/SPS-48 is a US naval electronically scanned array, air search three-dimensional radar system manufactured by ITT Exelis and deployed in the 1960s as the primary air search sensor for anti-aircraft warships. The deployment of the AN/SPY-1 and the end of the Cold War led to the decommissioning of many such ships, and many of these vessel's AN/SPS-48 sets were reused on aircraft carriers and amphibious ships where it is used to direct targets for air defense systems such as the Sea Sparrow and RIM-116 SAM missiles. The AN/AQS-13 series was a helicopter dipping sonar system for the United States Navy. These systems were deployed as the primary inner zone anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sensor on aircraft carrier based helicopters for over five decades. Companion versions with the AQS-18 designation were exported to various nations around the globe.

The Comprehensive Display System (CDS) was a command, control, and coordination system of the British Royal Navy (RN) that worked with the detection/search Type 984 radar. The system was installed on a total of six ships starting in 1957. The US Navy purchased a prototype CDS and produced twenty of their own version, the Electronic Data System (EDS). These were used on a number of ships until 1968. A modified version, the Data Handling System, was used with the AMES Type 82 radar by the Royal Air Force, and US Air Force very nearly used it as well.

H/ZKJ series and its derivative H/ZKT series naval systems are Chinese combat data /management systems (CDS/CMS) installed on board Chinese surface combatants of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and they are usually referred as ZKJ and ZKT for short. The designation is an abbreviation of Pinyin: H for Haijun, Z for Zhihui, and K for Kongzhi, J for Jian and T for Ting.

Marine Tactical Data System, commonly known as MTDS, was a mobile, ground based, aviation command and control system developed by the United States Marine Corps for the execution of anti-air warfare in support of the Fleet Marine Force (FMF). It was the Marine Corps' first semi-automated system capable of collecting, processing, computing and displaying aircraft surveillance data while also sharing that information with other participating units via tactical data link. The system was developed in the late 1950s/early 1960s when it was recognized that due to the speed, range and complexity of fighter aircraft operations effective air control and air defense demanded enhanced situational awareness.
