The Abu Dhabi Islands Archaeological Survey (ADIAS) was established in 1992 on the instruction of the late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to survey for, record and where appropriate, excavate archaeological sites on the coast and islands of Abu Dhabi. Since 1992, ADIAS has identified over a thousand sites or groups of sites on the coast and islands of Abu Dhabi.

A total of more than 20 archaeological sites were identified on the island, ranging in time from the Neolithic. The population consists of about 10,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Qatari who have been granted United Arab Emirates (UAE) nationality. The island has many private farms for the ruling family of Abu Dhabi. The late ruler Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed al-Nahyan had a palace here. Al Nahyan are one of the six ruling families of the United Arab Emirates, and are based in the capital Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Al Nahyan is a branch of the House of Al Falahi, a branch of the Bani Yas tribe, and are related to the House of Al Falasi and also related to Bani Yas House of Al-Yassi, these two powerful houses/tribes are from which the ruling the family of Dubai, Al Maktoum, descends. Al Nahyans came to Abu Dhabi in the 18th century and hail from Liwa Oasis. They have been the rulers of Abu Dhabi since 1793, but have been ruling their tribe in Liwa Oasis hundreds of years back. Al-Aryam Island is an island off the west coast of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It was formerly known as Bu Khushaishah. It contains the royal palaces and horse ranches which belong to the ruling family, the Al Nahyans. Access is strictly prohibited to the public.
