The film is set against the backdrop of a Performing Arts College. The film was the brainchild of Shailendra Singh and the first release of his production house, Sony Pictures and Percept Picture Company. Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi was groundbreaking for the Bollywood film industry, presenting 300 debutants in the cast and crew, first time in the Indian cinema. The film was unsuccessful at the box office but the soundtrack of the film became chart buster.
