The stadium holds 30,000 people. It hosted the 20th Arabian Gulf Cup football competition in 2010. The first match was held between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

It is named after Muhammad bin Fahd, who was the governor of the Eastern Province from 1985 until 2013, and the architects were Malaysian duo Michael KC Cheah and his wife, Steph.
