The company was founded by Alfred Benzon (1823–1884) on 1 January 1849, when he acquired the pharmacy Svane Apotek on Østergade in Copenhagen and in the same time established a wholesaling business. In 1863 he established a chemical factory at Kalvebod Beach. In 1877 he established Teknisk Materialhandel at Ny Østergade 4.
After Alfred Benzon's death in 1884, his company was passed on to his sons Alfred Benzon (1855–1932) and Otto Benzon (1856–1927). [1]
Alfred Benzon Jr.'s son Bøje Benzon (1891–1976) and Otto Benzon's son Niels Benzon (1893–1975) became partners in the company in 1928. The factory and warehouses in Copenhagen were expanded several times and a department in Malmö was established in 1909. It was later followed by departments in Odense in 1932 and in Aarhus in 1937.
The company became a limited company (A/S) in 1936. Niels Benzon gave up his share of it but became the sole owner of Svaneapoteket as well as the subsidiary A/B Alfred Benzon & Co. in Malmø. [1]
Medicinalco A/S acquired the pharmaceutical factory Alfred Benzon A/S' wholesaling business in 1959. [2] It was operated under the name Mecobenzon A/S. [3] In 1991 it was merged with Nordisk Droge and Kemikalie A/S under the name Nomeco. [4] Monberg & Thorsen acquired all shares in Alfred Benzon A/S in 1965–1986 and the two companies merged in 1990.
The company's headquarters from 1908 at Halmtorvet 29 was converted into apartments in 2007–08. The building features a trompe-l'œil mural on one of its gables. Two older buildings from 1864 and 1867 has also survived.
The Alfred Benzon Foundation supports medical researchers and pharmacists.

Svane Apotek, which existed from 1660 to 1994, was one of the first pharmacies to open in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was in 1849 acquired by Alfred Nicolai Bentzon and was owned by the Benzon family until 1967. Its former building. a five-storey, Functionalist property located at the corner of Østergade and Ny Østergade, was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places by the Danish Heritage Agency in 1992.

The Zinn House, located at Kvæsthusgade 3, is a historic townhouse around the corner from the Nyhavn Canal in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It takes its name after the Zinn family, a wealthy family of merchants that owned it for more than 150 years. The composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann, who was married to Emma Sophie Amalie Zinn, a grand daughter of Johann Ludvig Zinn, lived on the second floor for more than 70 years in the period 1829–1900. The building was adapted in 1907. It was later in the century converted into offices. The building was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1959.
Aggersvold is a manor house and estate located just north of Jyderup, Holbæk Municipality, some 80 kilometres west of Copenhagen, Denmark. The current main building was built in 1833-35 for major-general Harald Rothe (1781-1848). It was listed on the Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1944.

Alfred Benzon was a Danish pharmacist, businessman and politician. He was responsible for the considerable expansion of the family's pharmaceutical company Alfred Benzon A/S. He was also the proprietor of the Swan Pharmacy in Copenhagen. He chaired the Pharmaceutical Society of Denmark from 1894 until 1926. He was a member of the Copenhagen City Council from 1896 to 1908 and the Danish parliament from 1901 to 1903.
