Eugénie Grandet is a novel first published in 1833 by French author Honoré de Balzac. While he was writing it he conceived his ambitious project, La Comédie humaine, and almost immediately prepared a second edition, revising the names of some of the characters so that Eugénie Grandet then fitted into the section: Scenes from provincial life in the Comédie. He dedicated the edition to Maria Du Fresnay, who was then his lover and was the mother of his daughter, Marie-Caroline Du Fresnay.

Nicola "Nikki" Shadwick is a character in Channel 4 soap Brookside played by Suzanne Collins from 27 March 1998 until the programme's final episode on 4 November 2003. Nikki's storylines have included being "date-raped" by Luke Musgrove at a party at Number 5, hosted by Leo Johnson and Tim O'Leary. Not long after this ordeal, Nikki had to deal with the deaths of her father Greg and brother Jason after an explosion on Brookside Parade, and was also stalked by an obsessive friend at her University. Her younger sister Emily was killed during the Brookside Siege of 2002 and her mother then moved to Brussels. In the final episode of Brookside Nikki reveals she is going to live with her Mother Margi in Brussels.

Verano del '98 is an Argentine telenovela intended for teenagers, broadcast by Telefe from January 26, 1998 until November 24, 2000. Allegedly planned as way to cover a programming gap for the summer of 1998, it became such a hit that it ended lasting three consecutive seasons. After the series aired Telefe came under fire as it became apparent that Verano del '98 was a thinly veiled copy of the popular American teen drama Dawson's Creek, which also started airing around the same time. Gustavo Yankelevich, Telefe's chief artistic director, admitted having attended an early screening of Dawson's Creek in 1997 but thought Sony had lost interest in the project and decided to use it as inspiration when developing Verano del '98. Sony and Telefe settled out of court.
