Arta is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Epirus region. Its capital is the town of Arta.
The HVDC Italy–Greece is a monopolar submarine power cable link between Italy and Greece with a maximum transmission power of 500 megawatts. It went in service in 2001. The HVDC Italy–Greece begins in the static inverter plant Galatina situated at 40°9′53″N 18°7′49″E in Italy and is implemented in its first 43 kilometres (27 mi) as underground cables. Then it crosses the Ionian Sea as a 160 kilometres (99 mi) long submarine cable. It reaches shore just a few kilometres south of Albanian border at 39°41′00″N 20°1′09″E, where the 110 kilometres (68 mi) long overhead line to Arachthos static inverter station situated at 39°11′00″N 20°57′48″E starts. The cathode is implemented as bare copper wire on the Italian site, the anode is installed in a bay in Greece at 39°40′28″N 20°4′05″E.
Ioannina is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the Epirus region. Its capital is the city of Ioannina. It is the largest regional unit in Epirus, and one of the largest regional units of Greece.
The Ambracian Gulf, also known as the Gulf of Arta or the Gulf of Actium, and in some official documents as the Amvrakikos Gulf, is a gulf of the Ionian Sea in northwestern Greece. About 40 km (25 mi) long and 15 km (9 mi) wide, it is one of the largest enclosed gulfs in Greece. The towns of Preveza, Amphilochia, and Vonitsa lie on its shores.
The Arachthos is a river in eastern Epirus, Greece. Its source is in the Pindus mountains, near the town Metsovo. It is 110 km (68 mi) long, and its drainage area is 2,209 km2 (853 sq mi). Its upper course is known as Metsovitikos. From its confluence with the Dipotamos near the village of Batza it is called Arachthos. It flows towards the south, passing between the Athamanika and the Xerovouni mountains. In this place meets the Plaka Bridge, the largest one-arch stone bridge in Greece. It enters the large Pournari Reservoir, in the Arta regional unit, which is about 18 km² and prevents flooding of the city of Arta and also supplies water to most of Epirus. The town of Peta is situated near the dam. Arta, about 8 km downstream of the dam, is the largest town on the river. Arta's historic landmark is the stone Bridge of Arta over the Arachthos. The river continues through the lowlands south of Arta, and finally empties into the Ambracian Gulf near Kommeno, 16 km southeast of Arta.
Athamanika or Tzoumerka is a mountain range in northwestern Greece, part of the wider Pindus mountain range. Its highest point is the mountain Kakarditsa, at 2,429 m. Its length is approximately 40 km from north to south and its width is approximately 15 to 20 km from east to west. The only major road crossing the Athamanika is the Greek National Road 30.
Xerovouni is a mountain in the southern part of the Epirus region, Greece. It covers the northeastern Preveza, the southern Ioannina and the northwestern Arta regional units. Its maximum elevation is 1,614 m. It is drained by the river Arachthos to the east and by the river Louros to the west. The nearest mountains are the Tomaros to the northwest and the Athamanika to the northeast. There are forests in the lower areas, the highest areas consist of dry grasslands.
Lakmos is a mountain in eastern Ioannina and western Trikala regional units. The mountain is a part of the Pindus mountain range. Its highest peak is the Peristeri, at 2,295 m elevation. It stretches from the village Krapsi in the west to near Metsovo in the east, over a length of about 20 km (12 mi). The nearest mountains are the Athamanika to the south, the Lygkos to the north and the Mitsikeli to the west. It is drained by the river Arachthos and its tributaries to the north, west and south, and by the Acheloos to the east.
Mitsikeli is a mountain range in the central part of the Pindus mountains, in Epirus, Greece. The mountain is located northeast of Ioannina and Lake Ioannina. Its highest elevation is 1,810 m. It stretches from near Kalpaki in the northwest to the eastern end of Lake Ioannina, a total length of 35 km. The northeastern slopes and the lower northwestern part of Mitsikeli are forested. The nearest mountains are the Tymfi to the north, the Lygkos to the northeast and the Lakmos to the east. It is drained by tributaries of the Thyamis to the northwest, towards Lake Ioannina to the southwest, by the Voidomatis to the northeast and by the Arachthos to the southeast.
Platanoussa is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Katsanochoria, Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. The community consists of the villages Platanoussa, Dafni and Zoodochos Pigi. Platanoussa is situated on the eastern slope of the Xerovouni mountain, above the right bank of the river Arachthos, at about 500 m above sea level. It is 8 km northeast of Anogeio, 29 km north of Arta and 31 km southeast of Ioannina.
Fortosi is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Katsanochoria, Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. The community consists of the villages Fortosi, Kostitsi, Patero and Nistora. Fortosi is situated in the northern foothills of the mountain Xerovouni, west of the Arachthos valley, at about 800 m elevation. It is 10 km west of Pramanta, 21 km southeast of Ioannina and 39 km north of Arta. There is an ancient castle built around the 4th century BC 2 km south of Patero.
Neochori is a village in the Arta regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Situated on the right bank of the river Arachthos, it was the seat of the former Arachthos municipality. The community has an area of 32.225 km2. As of 2011, the town's population was 1,737.
Palaiochori is a mountain village in the municipality of North Tzoumerka in the Ioannina regional unit, northern Greece. It is built on the western slope of the Athamanika mountains, at 750 m elevation. It is on the watershed between two small rivers that flow toward the Arachthos. Its population is 66 people. It is 4 km south of Vathypedo, 4 km northwest of Prosilio, 4 km west of Syrrako and 19 km southeast of Ioannina.
Petrovouni is a village in the municipal unit of Tzoumerka, Greece. It is situated on a mountainside of the Athamanika mountains, above the left bank of the river Arachthos, at 1,030 m elevation. It is 3 km north of Chouliarades, 9 km west of Syrrako and 17 km southeast of Ioannina. Its population is 79 people.
Nikolaos Skoufas is a municipality in the regional unit of Arta, Greece, named after Nikolaos Skoufas, a leader of the Greek independence movement. The seat of the municipality is in Peta. The municipality has an area of 231.842 km2.
The Μetsovitikos river is one of the primary tributaries of the Arachthos in Epirus, Greece. The mountainous basin through which it flows is distinguished into two sub-systems. The first one is the zone of the river springs.
