Early life and education

Aslan Kobakhia was born on 23 March 1960 in Lykhny, Gudauta District. Between 1981 and 1985 he studied at the Economics Faculty of the Abkhazian State University. [1]

Lykhny Human settlement in Georgia

Lykhny is a village in the Gudauta District of Abkhazia, a disputed region on the Black Sea coast. In medieval Georgian sources the village is also known as Zupu (ზუფუ). The village lies along the narrow Black Sea plain of Abkhazia at an elevation of 50 meters above sea level. Lykhny is located five kilometers from the administrative center of Gudauta. There are several important historical monuments in and around Lykhny. Of particular importance are the 10-11th century Church of the Virgin Mary and the ruins of a two-storey palace which was used as a residence by the princes of Abkhazia. An older monument, the fortress of Abaanta is located at the edge of the village on the left bank of the Khipsta River.

Gudauta District District in Abkhazia, Georgia

Gudauta District is a district of Abkhazia, Georgia’s breakaway republic. It corresponds to the eponymous Georgian district. Its capital is Gudauta, the town by the same name. The population of the district was 34,869 at the time of the 2003 census, down from 57,334 in 1989. By the time of the 2011 Census, the population had increased to 36,775.

Abkhazian State University university

The Abkhazian State University is the only university in Abkhazia. It was founded in 1979 on the basis of the Sukhumi Pedagogical Institute. Its first rector was Zurab Anchabadze.

Political career

In 1997, Kobakhia became Chairman of the State Committee for Customs in the Government of President Ardzinba under Prime Minister Sergei Bagapsh. He was re-appointed under Prime Ministers Viacheslav Tsugba and Anri Jergenia. On 18 December 2002, following the appointment of Gennadi Gagulia as Prime Minister, Kobakhia was replaced by Gagra District Head Grigori Enik. [2]

The Government of President Vladislav Ardzinba was the first Government of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Sergei Bagapsh Abkhazian politician

Sergei Uasyl-ipa Bagapsh was the second President of the Republic of Abkhazia. He was Prime Minister from 1997 to 1999 and was later elected as President in 2005. He was re-elected in the 2009 presidential election. He died on 29 May 2011, at the age of 62, from complications of surgery.

Viacheslav Mikhail-ipa Tsugba was the third Prime Minister of the Republic of Abkhazia from December 1999 to May 2001. Before his appointment as Prime Minister, Tsugba had headed the Central Election Committee, which had overseen the internationally unrecognised simultaneously held October 1999 presidential election and constitutional referendum.

In the March 2012 election, Kobakhia was elected to the 5th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia in constituency no. 2 (Sukhumi). He won a 25.35% plurality in the first round over six other candidates and defeated Akhra Abukhba in the run-off. [3] [4] Kobakhia had been nominated by the opposition Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia and became one of four of its eleven candidates to be elected to the 35-member Parliament. [5]

The 5th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia has been in place since 3 April 2012.

Peoples Assembly of Abkhazia legislature of Abkhazia

The People's Assembly of the Republic of Abkhazia is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Abkhazia.

On 16 August 2016, Kobakhia entered the Government of President Khajimba when he was appointed as one of three Vice Premiers and Minister for Internal Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Beslan Bartsits. [1]

Beslan Bartsits former Prime Minister of Abkhazia

Beslan Bartsits is a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia, having been appointed by President Raul Khajimba on 5 August 2016 with his term ending 25 April 2018. In the past, he has served as Head of the Presidential Administration, Head of Gagra District and Member of Parliament.

Raul Khajimba Abkhazian politician

Raul Jumkovich Khajimba is the current President of Abkhazia, having been elected in 2014 after the May Revolution. He was also Chairman of the Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia from 2010–2015. Beslan Butba is a businessman and a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia. He owns Abkhazia's only private television station Abaza TV and is the chairman of the Party of the Economic Development of Abkhazia. Butba was an unsuccessful candidate in the December 2009 presidential election.

The elections for the 5th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia were held in two rounds on 10 and 24 March 2012.

The 4th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia was in place from 2007 until 2012.

The 3rd convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia was in place from 2002 until 2007.

Valeri Bganba Abkhazian politician

Valeri Ramshukhovich Bganba is an Abkhazian politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Abkhazia since 18 September 2018. Prior to that he was the Speaker of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia from 2012 until 2017. He was elected as speaker on 3 April 2012 and was succeeded by Valery Kvarchia on 12 April 2017. Bganba became acting President on 1 June 2014, following the resignation of Alexander Ankvab as a result of the 2014 Abkhazian political crisis. On 25 September 2014 he was replaced by Raul Khajimba, the winner of the presidential elections on 24 August.

Almasbei Kchach was a former government member and vice-presidential candidate from Abkhazia who committed suicide when investigators came to arrest him in connection with an assassination attempt on President Alexander Ankvab.

Leonid Dzapshba is a two-time Minister for Internal Affairs of Abkhazia, a former Presidential candidate and the former head of the Football Federation of Abkhazia.

The Minister for Internal Affairs holds a ministerial position in the government of the Republic of Abkhazia. The post existed in the Soviet period within the Council of Ministers of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and since then has been occupied by 10 politicians, of whom three have occupied it twice. The current Minister is Aslan Kobakhia.

2014 Abkhazian presidential election

Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Abkhazia on 24 August 2014. The sixth such elections since the post of President of Abkhazia was created in 1994, they were held early due to the resignation of President Alexander Ankvab on 1 June 2014 following the 2014 Abkhazian political crisis. Four candidates contested the elections, which were won by Raul Khadjimba, who received just over 50% of the vote.

Shamil Adzynba is the current First Vice Premier of Abkhazia in the Government of President Khajimba, and a two-time acting Prime Minister.

Zaur Avidzba (1953–2015) was a politician and businessman from Abkhazia who was murdered in 2015.

On 3 April 2016, Abkhazia held local elections for the 6th convocations of its local assemblies in all districts except Gali.

Daur Arshba is a politician from Abkhazia. He is the Head of the Presidential Administration, having been appointed by President Raul Khajimba on 10 October 2016, and Chairman of the pro-government Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia. In the past, he has served as Vice Speaker of the People's Assembly and as Head of Tkvarcheli District. Following the death of Gennadi Gagulia on 8 September 2018, Arshba was appointed Acting Prime Minister of Abkhazia, a position he held until 18 September 2018.

Nodik Kvitsinia is a member of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia who was convicted for the murder of Russian businessman Sergei Klemantovich and his partner Oksana Skarednova.
