Astronauts is the solo musical project of the UK songwriter, Dan Carney. He is signed to London-based imprint Lo Recordings. [1]
Carney initially conceived the project in 2013, following the end of his previous band Dark Captain, and while recuperating from a badly broken leg. [2] After the first Astronauts songs were uploaded to SoundCloud in November 2013, [3] a deal was signed with Lo Recordings.
The debut Astronauts single, "Skydive", was released in June 2014, receiving support from BBC Radio 6 Music's Tom Ravenscroft, [4] Gideon Coe, [5] Cerys Matthews, [6] and Steve Lamacq, [7] as well as BBC Radio Scotland's Roddy Hart, [8] and Huey Morgan on BBC Radio 2, [9] earning Carney comparisons with Elliott Smith, [10] Broken Bells, and The Shins, [11] and making the Hype Machine charts. [12] The video for the song was devised and directed by London-based Irish artist Michelle Deignan. [13]
The debut album, Hollow Ponds, named after an area of Epping Forest near where Carney lives, and was hospitalised following his leg fracture, [14] was released in July 2014. [15] The collection featured musical contributions from Firestations' Michael Cranny (who co-authored a number of tracks), [16] London alt-folk singer Jess Bryant [17] and cellist Nicole Robson (Bat For Lashes, Stats), [18] with Sputnik Music describing the sound as "often bleak and highly contemplative indie-folk". The second album 'End Codes' was released in May 2016. [20]
Carney appears on There Are No Goodbyes, the 2009 album from Robin Proper-Sheppard's Sophia, playing guitar and providing vocal harmonies on the song "Storm Clouds". [21] The album was released by the City Slang label. [22]
He also has a PhD in developmental psychology, [23] and has authored a number of research papers examining cognitive processing and memory in a number of developmental disorders. [24] Using developmental trajectories to examine verbal and visuospatial short-term memory development in children and adolescents with Williams and Down syndromes, [25] and executive function in Williams and Down syndromes. [26]

Williams syndrome (WS), also Williams–Beuren syndrome (WBS), is a genetic disorder that affects many parts of the body. Facial features frequently include a broad forehead, underdeveloped chin, short nose, and full cheeks. Mild to moderate intellectual disability is observed in people with WS, with particular challenges with visual spatial tasks such as drawing. Verbal skills are relatively unaffected. Many people with WS have an outgoing personality, an openness to engaging with other people, and a happy disposition. Medical issues with teeth, heart problems, and periods of high blood calcium are common.
The Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney (drums). The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the 2000s. Nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) is proposed neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by core deficits in visual-spatial processing and a significant discrepancy between verbal and nonverbal intelligence. A review of papers found that proposed diagnostic criteria were inconsistent. Proposed additional diagnostic criteria include intact verbal intelligence, and deficits in the following: visuoconstruction abilities, speech prosody, fine-motor coordination, mathematical reasoning, visuospatial memory and social skills. NVLD is not recognised by the DSM-5 and is not clinically distinct from learning disorder.

Hollow Ponds is the name of a lake in Leytonstone, east London, where Albarn grew up, and the song references several events from his life. The song contains a sample of a Central line train leaving Leytonstone station on the London Underground.
