The discus throw, also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue Discobolus. Although not part of the modern pentathlon, it was one of the events of the ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least to 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon.
Seema Punia-Antil is an Indian discus thrower. Her personal best throw is 62.62 m (205.4 ft), achieved at the Pat Young's Throwers Classic 2016 at Salinas (California) in the US.
Ehsan Haddadi is an Iranian discus thrower. He is 193 cm and 127 kg.
An Athletics competition was contested at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar from December 7 to December 12. Twenty-three events were contested for the men while 22 were on the slate for the women. Only the 3000 Meter Steeplechase was not contested for by the women. All track and field events were held at Khalifa International Stadium, and the racewalking and marathon took place at the Doha Corniche. A total of 530 athletes from 41 nations took part in the competition. Bhutan, Brunei, Indonesia and Myanmar were the only nations without a representative in the events.
Iran participated in the 2006 Asian Games held in the city of Doha. This country is ranked 6th with 11 gold medals in this edition of the Asiad.
Rashid Shafi Al-Dosari is a Qatari track and field athlete who competes in the discus throw. He has represented Qatar at the Summer Olympics on two occasions, making his debut in 2000 and reaching the final at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was also a finalist at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics. In 2003 he was banned from competing for two years due to his refusal to be tested for doping.
At the 2011 Pan Arab Games, the athletics events are currently being held at Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar from 15–20 December. A total of 45 events are to be contested, comprising 23 men's events and 22 for female athletes. The track and field events took place within the stadium while the half marathon was contested on a specially-designed course around the Aspire Zone. The shorter track events have a two-round format with qualifying heats and a final race, while the long-distance races and throwing events are contested in a straight final format with no qualifying rounds. In addition to the elite level programme, a total of 30 para-athletics events were contested between athletes with a disability on 21 and 22 December, comprising 25 men's events and five women's events.
Lindsay Sutton is an Australian track and field athlete who represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in athletics.
Aled Siôn Davies MBE is a Welsh Paralympian athlete competing mainly in category F42 throwing events. In 2012 he became the world record holder of the F42 shot put and in the 2012 Summer Paralympics he took the bronze medal in shot put and gold in the discus. In 2013 Davies took the World Championship gold in both the shot put and discus in Lyon. He won double gold in his home country at the 2014 IPC Athletics European Championships in the shot put and discus. This followed his silver medal in the F42-44 discus from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where he represented Wales.

Tomas Walsh is a New Zealand athlete who competes mainly in the shot put. He is the current national record holder both outdoors and indoors for the event. His personal best of 22.90 m, set in Doha, 5 October 2019, is also the Oceanian record and makes him the fifth best shot putter in history, tied with Ryan Crouser who threw the same distance in the same World Championship competition.
Daniel Ståhl is a Swedish athlete specialising in the discus throw. He competed at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing finishing fifth. In 2016, he competed at the European Championships, where he finished fifth. Daniel also competed at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro the same year, where he failed to qualify for the final. Just a couple of weeks following his failure in Rio, Daniel competed at the Swedish Championships in Sollentuna. Not only did he win the discus throw on a new personal best 68.72 metres, it was also the new world leading throw of 2016, surpassing Christoph Harting's 68.37 metres from the Rio Olympics final. By the end of the year, it remained the number one throw in 2016. The day before, Daniel had also won the shot put on a new personal best 19.38 metres. In June 2017, Ståhl managed a throw of 71.29 metres in Sollentuna, setting a new personal best and improving the Swedish record set in 1984 by Rickard Bruch by three centimetres. Ståhl's throw was farther than any discus throw in the world since 2013.
Ryan Crouser is an American shot putter and discus thrower. Crouser won the gold medal in the shot put at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. He had previously won the gold medal in the boys' shot put at the 2009 World Youth Championships and was a four-time NCAA champion in the shot put indoors and outdoors for the University of Texas. He is a three time USA National Outdoor Shot Put Champion, and the current 2019 USA Indoor National Shot Put Champion. At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, Crouser won the silver medal in "the greatest – and closest – shot put competition ever" that "Redefines Men's Shot Put" according to the IAAF.
Hamida Al-Habsi is an Omani shot putter and discus thrower. In September 2005, she participated in the Islamic Women's Games in Tehran where she threw a distance of 10.24 metres, becoming a national record for Omani women. In February 2006, she competed at the Indoor Asia Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, where she achieved her personal best indoor record of 9.87 metres. In December 2011, Al-Habsi participated in the discus at the Pan Arab Games in the Qatari capital of Doha and finished 4th out of 5.

Arshad Nadeem is a Pakistani athlete specialising in the javelin throw. He represents WAPDA in domestic competition. In Dec 2019, he established a new South Asian Games record in Javelin throw with a distance of 86.29 m, thus securing direct qualification to 2020 Summer Olympics.
