BNS Bishkhali (formerly known as PNS Jessore) was a large patrol craft (LPC) of Bangladesh Navy. The ship joined the Bangladesh Navy fleet after Bangladesh Liberation War.

History

During the liberation war of 1971, the naval commandos of Bangladesh sunk the Pakistan Navy Ship 'PNS Jessore'. After the war, the ship was salvaged and extensively repaired at Khulna Shipyard. Then it was commissioned in Bangladesh Navy as BNS Bishkhali on 23 November 1978. [1]

Career

During the service period, the ship served at Khulna under Commodore Commanding BN Khulna (COMKHUL). After serving for around 36 years, on 20 May 2014, she was decommissioned from the Bangladesh Navy. She was decommissioned at Digraj naval base in Mongla, Khulna due to operational limitations. [2]

Armament

The Ship was armed with two Breda 40 mm / 70 gun which can fire at a rate of 300 rds / min to a distance 12.5 km (6.8 n miles)

Musharraf Husain Khan was a Bangladesh Navy Rear Admiral who has served as the chief of the Bangladesh Navy from 7 November 1973 to 3 November 1979. After the Bangladesh war of Independence, Admiral Khan was appointed as the 1st Chief of the Naval Staff of the Bangladesh Navy in November 1973 by the Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During his tenure, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on December 10, 1974 commissioned Bangladesh Navy's largest training base BNS Issa Khan and also handed over “naval ensign” to Bangladesh Navy on the same day. Admiral M. H. Khan joined the Pakistan Navy in 1950. Upon selection as a Cadet into the Pakistan Navy, he was sent to the Royal Navy for training. In 1951 he entered Royal Naval College Dartmouth and after a few years of sea time on RN ships he subsequently, as a Sub Lieutenant was selected to attend the Royal Naval College, Greenwich in 1954. He served on several Royal Naval ships including the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. He continued his career in the Pakistan Navy and was on a fast track where he achieved the rank of Captain and commanded several of the primary Naval Ships of the Pakistan Navy, including the cruiser PNS Babur and the flag ship destroyer PNS Khaibar. Admiral Khan created the Bangladesh Navy from scratch in very difficult circumstances but was able to create and implement the framework upon which the Bangladesh Navy has been built, following the scope and plan that he laid out in his six plus years as Naval Chief.

Brooke Marine was a Lowestoft-based shipbuilding firm. The company constructed boats and small ships for civilian and commercial use, as well as minor warships for the Royal Navy, Royal Navy of Oman, Royal Australian Navy, Kenya Navy and United States Navy.

BNS <i>Umar Farooq</i> (1976)

BNS Umar Farooq was a Salisbury-class frigate of the Bangladesh Navy. She was the first frigate to enter service with the Bangladesh Navy. The ship was named after the second Rashidun Caliph Umar.

The Khulna Shipyard Limited(Bengali: খুলনা শিপইয়ার্ড লিমিটেড) is a Bangladeshi state owned defense contractor based in Khulna, Bangladesh. It is located on 68.97 acres (27.91 ha) of land at Labanchara, Khulna, Bangladesh. It is about 45 km north from the Port of Mongla. The shipyard has the capacity to build steel / aluminium ships up to 90 m length and 700 tons lightweight. The shipyard has a slipway with a capacity to dock and undock vessels up to 700 tons lightweight and overall length of 84 meters.

Mohammad Musa is a two star military admiral of Bangladesh Navy. He is the incumbent Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University. Prior to joining here, he served as the Chairman of Mongla Port Authority. Prior to this appointment, he was Commander of Khulna Naval Area.
