The United Arab Republic was a sovereign state in the Middle East from 1958 until 1961. It was initially a political union between Egypt and Syria from 1958 until Syria seceded from the union following the 1961 Syrian coup d'état. Egypt continued to be known officially as the United Arab Republic until September 1971 when it was formally dissolved by Anwar Sadat.
The Arab League, formally the League of Arab States, is a regional organization in the Arab world. The Arab League was formed in Cairo on 22 March 1945, initially with six members: Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. Yemen joined as a member on 5 May 1945. Currently, the League has 22 members.
Syria national basketball team, nicknamed Nosour Qasioun , represents Syria in international basketball competitions. The squad is governed by SBF, and is part of the FIBA Asia zone. Based on the number of overall medals won, Syria is a major force among basketball teams of WABA and ABC. The team has won eight medals at the WABA Championship and five at the Arab Basketball Championship.
The Arab Games, formerly called the Pan-Arab Games, are a regional multi-sport event held between nations from the Arab world. They are organized by the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees. The first Games took place in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt. Intended to be held every four years since, political turmoil as well as financial difficulties have made the event an unstable one. Women first competed in 1985.
The 1999 Arab Games were ninth edition of the multi-sport event between Arab countries and were held from August 15 to August 31. A total of around 4600 athletes from 21 countries participated in the 29 sports on offer. The opening ceremony that took place in Al Hussein Youth City Stadium was officially opened by King Abdullah II.
The Arab States have tried to form unions of several non-political organizations. Sport has been one of the main activities used to unify Arabs. Several tournaments and games were created to let Arab participate in sports, in an effort to bring the members of the Arab world closer to each other.
Mohamed Abdelfattah, commonly known by his nickname "Bogy", is a retired Egyptian Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler who competed in 76 kg, 84 kg, and 96 kg weight class. He is a 2006 world champion, 3 time World Medalist, and 3 time Olympian. After retiring as a player, Bogy became coach of Sweden National Team, and in his first season 2009 he successfully guided Jimmy Lidberg to win a silver medal and Jalmar Sjöberg to win a bronze medal in the 2009 world championship in Denmark.
Gretta Taslakian is a Lebanese sprinter of Armenian and Syrian descent who specializes in the 200 metres and 400 meters. She is the first Lebanese woman to participate in three Olympic Games. Gretta is the current Lebanese national record holder in the outdoor 200 meters and 400 meters and indoor 400 meters. She was also a member of the record holding team in the outdoor 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay.
Ahmed Rifaat was an Egyptian football coach and former player, previously the head coach of Zamalek SC. Rifaat died on 13 December 2017.
At the 2007 Pan Arab Games, the athletics events were held at the Military Academy Stadium in Cairo, Egypt from 21 to 24 November. A total of 46 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 23 by female athletes. Morocco was the most successful nation in the competition, taking ten gold medals in a 23-medal haul. Sudan and Tunisia won the second and third greatest number of golds with 8 and 7. The host country, Egypt, achieved six gold medals but also shared the joint highest total medal count with Morocco. Seven Games records were beaten at the 2007 edition of the event.

Badminton has been part of the Arab Games since 1999 in Amman, Jordan. Syria tops the medal table, having won 15 gold medals, 3 silvers and 3 bronze medals. Algeria won four golds and two silvers while Egypt won a gold, three silvers and six bronzes. Sudan won its first medal in badminton at the 2007 Pan Arab Games.
Egypt competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012, sending one of its largest delegations ever. A total of 110 Egyptian athletes participated in 83 events across 20 sports, with more women taking part than ever before. The nation's flagbearer in the opening ceremonies was Hesham Mesbah, a judoka who was Egypt's only medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Egypt won two medals during the course of the Games: Alaaeldin Abouelkassem earned silver in the men's foil, becoming the first competitor from an African nation to win a fencing medal, while Karam Gaber captured silver in the men's 84 kg Greco-Roman wrestling event. Two Egyptian weightlifters were awarded medals retroactively, after higher-ranked competitors were disqualified for doping: Abeer Abdelrahman took silver in the women's 75 kg event, while Tarek Yehia, received bronze in the men's 85 kg event. Among other achievements, Mostafa Mansour was the nation's first competitor in sprint canoeing while fencer Shaimaa El-Gammal became the first Egyptian female to appear in four editions of the Olympics.
Ramy Helmy El-Awady is an Egyptian Amateur boxer who competed at the 2012 Olympics at light flyweight. He fights from an orthodox stance.
The 1988 Arab Junior Athletics Championships was the third edition of the international athletics competition for under-20 athletes from Arab countries. It took place in Damascus, Syria – the first time the event was staged in West Asia. A total of 41 athletics events were contested, 23 for men and 18 for women. Morocco, a regional power in the sport, did not send a team. Syria entered for the first time.
The 2013 Arab Youth Athletics Championships was the fourth edition of the international athletics competition for under-18 athletes from Arab countries. Organised by the Arab Athletic Federation, it took place in the Egyptian capital Cairo from 21–23 June. A total of forty events were contested, of which 20 by male and 20 by female athletes. The girls' steeplechase was contested for the first time, making the programme match that of the 2013 World Youth Championships in Athletics. The racewalking events were held on roads, rather than the usual track surface.
The chess events at the 2007 Pan Arab Games were held from 13 to 21 November at the Olympic Centre in Maadi, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt. Twelve men's teams and nine women's teams competed separately in tournaments conducted at classical time controls. Medals were awarded to the teams scoring the highest number of board points, as well as to individual players with the best performances by percentage score on each board with at least five games played. Medals were also awarded to the best overall performances on any board by percentage score. Bronze medals were awarded for both third and fourth-place individual performances.
The Iraq national badminton team represents Iraq in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by the Iraq Badminton Federation, the governing body for Iraqi badminton.
The Syria national badminton team represents Syria in international badminton team competitions. The national team is controlled by the Syria Arab Badminton Association. The national team is recognized in the BWF as the Syrian Arab Republic.
The Sudan national badminton team represents Sudan in international badminton team competitions. It is controlled by the Sudan Badminton Federation, the national governing body for Sudanese badminton. The Sudanese team is affiliated with the Sudan Olympic Committee and the Badminton Confederation of Africa.
