The Elbe is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Giant Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia, then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 kilometres northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 km (680 mi).
Zittau is the southeasternmost city in the German state of Saxony, and is located in the district of Görlitz, Germany's easternmost district. It has a population of around 25,000, and is one of the most important cities in the region of Lusatia.
The Freiberger Mulde is the right-hand, 124-kilometre-long (77 mi) headstream of the river Mulde, whose catchment covers an area of 2,981 km2 (1,151 sq mi) in the Czech Republic and Germany in central Saxony. It has a volumetric flow of 35.3 m3/s (1,250 cu ft/s) which is greater than that of the other headstream, the Zwickauer Mulde who flow is about 26.4 m3/s (930 cu ft/s), which is nevertheless the longer stream.
The Ohře or, slightly less commonly in English sources, the Eger, is a 316 km river in Germany (50 km) and the Czech Republic (266 km), left tributary of the Elbe. The river's catchment area is 5,588 km2, of which 4,601 km2 is in the Czech Republic, 920 km2 in Bavaria and 67 km2 in Saxony. It is the fourth-longest river in the Czech Republic.
The Lusatian Highlands or Lusatian Hills form a hilly region in Germany and the Czech Republic. A western extension of the Sudetes range, it is located on the border of the German state of Saxony with the Czech Bohemian region. It is one of the eight natural landscapes of Upper Lusatia.
The Biela or Bělá or Ostrovská Bělá is a river in eastern Germany and northern Czech Republic, a left tributary of the Elbe. The source is near Ostrov hamlet in the municipality of Tisá, in the Bohemian Switzerland, northwest of Děčín. After a few km it crosses into Saxony. The town Königstein is located at the confluence of the Biela with the Elbe.
