Balkan Inc. was a Slovenian television series. It was broadcast in 2006.
In 2006, Slovenian television took a bold leap into the murky depths of organized crime with Balkan Inc., a gritty, noir-inspired series that captivated audiences across the Balkans. Produced by VPK and helmed by Tomaz Lehpamer, the show was based, on the novels Bijela Jutra (White Mornings) and Marševski korak (March Step) by Croatian author Robert Naprta, who also penned the series' screenplay. Set in a shadowy urban landscape, Balkan Inc. follows Marko Prilika—nicknamed Čens (Chance)—a morally ambiguous cop who navigates the criminal underbelly of the city. Far from a clean-cut hero, Čens is ambiguously complex — entangled in a world of cocaine, prostitution, corruption, and murder while in a seemingly contradictory position of authority. His investigations lead him through a labyrinth of smugglers, crooked officials, and blackmail schemes, blurring the line between justice and survival.
The series explores themes of moral decay, systemic corruption, and the psychological toll of living in a society where crime and politics are deeply intertwined. It’s a raw portrayal of post-Yugoslav urban life, where the remnants of war and transition to capitalism have left scars on both institutions and individuals.
Filmed in Belgrade, Serbia, the show was a cross-border production that reflected the interconnectedness of Balkan media and culture.
Balkan Inc. spawned neither sequels nor spin-offs. But its bold storytelling and unflinching portrayal of Balkan realities made it a standout in Slovenian television history. It remains a compelling watch for those interested in crime dramas with a regional twist and serves as a cultural snapshot of the post-Yugoslav era.
