The administrative centre was the village of Mortenhals where the main church for the municipality, Malangen Church, is located.

Two major highways, European route E6 and European route E8, meet in this village, making it a major crossroads in Northern Norway, with an estimated annual passage of 3 million people. The 0.7-square-kilometre (170-acre) village has a population (2017) of 464 which gives the village a population density of 663 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,720/sq mi). Nordkjosbotn Church is located in this village. Macks Ølbryggeri, a brewery, has been operating in Nordkjosbotn since 2012.

Rock carvings at Tennes in Balsfjord Municipality in Troms county, Norway comprise figures of prehistoric rock art (bergkunst). The oldest figures have been dated to 4600 BC and the most recent to about 2600 BC. The figures were the first from a hunting culture that were discovered in Scandinavia.

Balsfjorden (Norwegian) or Báhccavuotna (Northern Sami) is a fjord in Troms county, Norway. The 57-kilometre (35 mi) long fjord runs through Balsfjord Municipality and Tromsø Municipality. It branches off the Tromsøysundet strait just south of the city of Tromsø and it flows in a north–south direction, ranging from 2 to 7 kilometres wide. The European route E8 highway follows most of the eastern shore of the fjord and the European route E6 highway runs along the southern end of the fjord. The village of Storsteinnes lies along the southwestern coast of the fjord and the village of Nordkjosbotn lies at the southeastern end of the fjord.

Mortenhals or Mortenshals is a village in Balsfjord Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The village is located along the Malangen fjord, across the fjord from Rossfjordstraumen. The village of Mestervik is located about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the south. Malangen Church is located here. This village was the administrative centre of the old Malangen Municipality which existed from 1871 until 1964.
