Barry Metcalf (born 1959) is an American politician from Kentucky who was a member of the Kentucky Senate from 1994 to 1999. [1] Metcalf was first elected in a March 1994 special election following the resignation of incumbent senator Landon Sexton. [2] Metcalf ran for the U.S. Senate in 1998,losing the Republican nomination to Jim Bunning. [3] He was succeeded in the state senate by Democrat Ed Worley,who defeated his brother Mark Metcalf.

Wilkinson dropped out of college at the University of Kentucky in 1962 to attend to a book retail business he started. The business rapidly became a national success,and Wilkinson re-invested his profits in real estate,farming,transportation,banking,coal,and construction ventures,becoming extremely wealthy. In 1987,he joined a crowded field in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. After running behind two former governors and the sitting lieutenant governor for most of the race,Wilkinson began to climb in the polls after hiring then-unknown campaign consultant James Carville. Wilkinson campaigned on a promise of no new taxes and advocated a state lottery as an alternative means of raising money for the state. Wilkinson surprised most political observers by winning the primary and going on to defeat his Republican challenger in the general election.

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Wendell Ford decided to retire,instead of seeking a fifth term. Republican U.S. Representative Jim Bunning narrowly won the open seat,defeating Democratic U.S. Representative Scotty Baesler. This was the first open Senate seat since 1972. By a margin of 0.59%,this election was the second-closest race of the 1998 Senate election cycle,behind only the election in Nevada. Bunning's swearing-in marked the first time since 1973 that Republicans held both United States Senate seats from Kentucky. This was the first open-seat United States Senate election in Kentucky since 1972 and the first open-seat election for this seat since 1968.
