Beirut Phoenicians Rugby Club was the first rugby union club team/club in Lebanon. It was established in 1995 in response to a request from the British embassy for a rugby team to play HMS Cardiff that was docked in Beirut for a few days in November 1995.[ citation needed ]

Lebanon became an associate member of the now-defunct Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union in 2007, before joining the ARFU as an associate member in December 2009. It attained full membership in Asia by 2013, and associate status with World Rugby in 2018.
