Benjamin Poponawa (born 28 January 1960) is a Papua New Guinea politician. [1] He has been a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea since July 2007, representing the electorate of Tambul-Nebilyer Open. He was initially elected as an independent, but immediately joined the then-governing National Alliance upon his election.

The National Parliament of Papua New Guinea is the unicameral national legislature in Papua New Guinea. It was created in 1964 as the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea but gained its current name after the nation was granted independence in 1975.

The National Alliance Party has operated as a political party in Papua New Guinea since 1995. The party had 15 members in the 111-seat National Parliament of Papua New Guinea as of August 2017, and was part of the Alliance Accord for Change as part of the Opposition to the O'Neill led government for Papua New Guinea's 10th Parliament.

Poponawa first contested the 2002 general election, but was defeated by People's Democratic Movement candidate Mark Anis. [2] He again contested the seat as an independent at the 2007 general election, and was successful despite having trailed for most of the count. [3] He immediately announced his intention to join the governing National Alliance. [4] [5] He was subsequently named as Parliamentary Secretary for Treasury and Finance by Prime Minister Michael Somare. [6]

The People's Democratic Movement is a political party in Papua New Guinea. It was founded by Paias Wingti in 1985, after his faction left the Pangu Party. Wingti served as prime minister from 1985 to 1988 and from 1992 to 1994. He was later replaced as leader by Mekere Morauta who also served as prime minister during his leadership of the PDM from 1999 to 2002.

In January 2012, he joined Don Polye's new Triumph Heritage Empowerment Rural Party. [7] He left the party in May 2014. [8]

Charles Abel is a Papua New Guinean politician. He has been a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea since August 2007, representing the electorate of Alotau Open. He has been the Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea since August 2017. He was previously Minister for National Planning in the O'Neill government from 2012 to 2017.

Ezekiel Anisi was a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from August until October 2012, when he was unseated by the National Court, and from a December 2013 by-election until his death, representing the electorate of Ambunti-Dreikikir Open in East Sepik Province. He was the youngest MP in Papua New Guinea.

Labi Amaiu is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2012 to 2017, representing the electorate of Moresby North East Open for the People's Movement for Change (2012-2013) and People's National Congress (2013-2017). He was Vice-Minister for Sports and the Pacific Games in the ministry of Peter O'Neill.

Tony Aimo is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2002 to 2012 and again from 2012 to 2013, representing the electorate of Ambunti-Drekikir Open. He was Minister for Correctional Services under Michael Somare from 2007 until 2011, although he was stood aside for three months in 2010. A long-time People's Action Party member, he was briefly reported to have joined the Papua New Guinea Party following the fall of the Somare government, only to emerge as a member of Somare's National Alliance Party.

Lucas Dawa Dekena is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2007 to 2013, representing the electorate of Gumine Open, initially for the National Alliance Party but switching to the Papua New Guinea Party after the 2011 defeat of the Somare government. He was Minister for Lands and Physical Planning under both Michael Somare and Peter O'Neill from 2010 to 2012. His name is spelled in various ways; he is also sometimes referred to as Dawa Lucas.

De Kewanu is a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2012 to 2017, representing the electorate of Mendi Open, firstly as an independent (2012) then the Triumph Heritage Empowerment Party (2013-2014) and then finally shifted to the People's National Congress (2014-present). He was Vice-Minister for Works and Implementation in the government of Peter O'Neill.
