The Big Eight Conference was a high school athletic league in Iowa made up of some of the largest schools in the state.
Ames High School is the sole high school in Ames, Iowa, United States.
Cedar Falls High School is a high school located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It is a part of Cedar Falls Community Schools.
Marshalltown High School (MHS) is located in Marshalltown, Iowa and is home to 1,600 students in grades 9–12.
The Big Eight Conference was formed in 1963 when Des Moines North and Des Moines East left the old Big Six Conference to compete in the Metropolitan Conference. The league's four remaining members (Fort Dodge, Mason City, and the Waterloo schools) reached out to other large schools in central Iowa to rebuild the conference. Cedar Falls joined from the Northeast Iowa Conference and Ames, Marshalltown, and Newton joined from the Central Iowa Conference. The conference became known as the Big Nine Conference when Waterloo Central opened in 1972. The name would be changed back to the Big Eight Conference in 1988 when Waterloo Central, as part of a school district reorganization, was converted to a junior high school.
North High School, usually referred to simply as North, is a secondary school located in Des Moines, Iowa. It is one of five secondary schools under the district of the Des Moines Public Schools.
East High School, usually referred to simply as East, is a secondary school located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. East is the largest high school in the state in population with over 2,400 students. East is the oldest high school in the Des Moines metro and is part of the Des Moines Public Schools district.
The Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) is a seven school athletic conference made up of mid-sized schools in the Northeast Corner of Iowa. The conference dates in 1920, making it one of Iowa's oldest existing athletic conferences.
From the onset, the league was one of the strongest in the state. In its first year of competition, league schools captured state championships in four of the seven sports the IHSAA conducted championships for at the time. The league also claimed the first two 5-on-5 girls' basketball titles in state history (for many years the IGHSAU only sponsored 6-on-6 basketball). Among other notable achievements, the league also had a stronghold on the boys' cross country title for 12 years, winning a state title all but one year from 1964 to 1975.

The league was stable until the late 1980s when Newton and Ames left to join the Central Iowa Metro League. Soon after, the other members of the conference began looking for new homes. Marshalltown found a home in the CIML. Cedar Falls, Waterloo East, and Waterloo West then joined the Mississippi Valley Conference and Fort Dodge and Mason City, geographic outliers to among the rest of the state's largest schools, followed Marshalltown, Ames, and Newton to the CIML after being originally being declined membership in the league.
The Central Iowa Metro League is a high school athletic conference whose members are located in the metropolitan areas of central Iowa, with most of the schools being from the Des Moines area.

Each school is classified based on enrollment as 6A or 5A for football and 4A for basketball, the classes for the largest schools in Indiana. The Duneland Conference is also quite known for its gymnastics programs which have won a combined total of 35 state championship and state runner-up titles.

Most of these schools are in 35,000+ population towns like Anderson, Marion, Kokomo, Lafayette, Muncie, and Richmond. Several of the nation's largest gymnasiums belong to members of this conference.

Named for the three rivers that drain in the area, the sixteen team league is one of the strongest conferences in Iowa. WaMaC also participates in concert choir and concert band performances, calling them WaMaC Honor Choirs and WaMaC Honor Bands, where instead of competing, the schools perform together.

The school colors are black and red. Until recently, the mascot was a Mohawk. The current mascot is Mo the Hawk, an anthropomorphic bird, though some Mohawk imagery is still used.
