Tusculum University is a private Presbyterian university with its main campus in Tusculum, Tennessee. It is Tennessee's first university and the 28th-oldest operating college or university in the United States.
Carl William Torbush Jr. was an American American football and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Louisiana Tech University in 1987, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 to 2000, and East Tennessee State University (ETSU) from 2013 to 2017, compiling a career college football record of 31–48. Outside of football, Torbush was the head baseball coach at Southeastern Louisiana University from 1977 to 1979, tallying a mark of 75–58. Torbush retired from coaching in December 2017.
Stephen Charles Sloan was an American professional football player who became a college football coach and athletics administrator. He played in college as a quarterback at the University of Alabama from 1962 to 1965 and then spent two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Atlanta Falcons (1966–1967). Sloan then returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach (1968-1970), and then served one year each as an offensive coordinator at Florida State (1971) and Georgia Tech (1972). At Florida State he was on the staff with linebackers coach Bill Parcells. Sloan then got his first head coaching job at Vanderbilt University (1973–1974), where he brought Parcells with him, and at his next job at Texas Tech University (1975–1977), he made Parcells the defensive coordinator. Sloan then went on to the University of Mississippi (1978–1982), and Duke University (1983–1986), compiling a career record of 68–86–3. He returned to Vanderbilt to serve as offensive coordinator for one year (1990) before retiring from coaching. He also served as the athletic director at the University of Alabama (1987-1989), the University of North Texas (1991-1993), University of Central Florida (1993-2002), and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (2002-2006), before his retirement in 2006. In 2000, Sloan was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. He died on April 14, 2024, at the age of 79.
Mike O'Cain is a former American college football coach and player. He was formerly the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the East Tennessee State University football team. He was the former offensive coordinator for James Madison and served as quarterbacks coach for the Virginia Tech Hokies football team, a position he had held from the 2006 season until the end of the 2012 season. O'Cain served as the head football coach at North Carolina State University from 1993 to 1999, compiling a record of 41–40. He played football as a quarterback and punter at Clemson University from 1974 to 1976.
Joseph Levi "Joe Lee" Dunn, Sr was an American college football coach and player. As a defensive coordinator, he was known for coaching from the sidelines, seldom using a headset or carrying playsheets, and his aggressive, unorthodox schemes. He is widely credited with inventing the attacking 3-3-5 scheme that has been used by several college and high school teams.

The East Tennessee State Buccaneers are the 17 intercollegiate athletics teams that represent East Tennessee State University (ETSU), located in Johnson City, Tennessee. ETSU's teams include men and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field; women's-only softball and volleyball; and men's-only baseball and football. The Buccaneers compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon).
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers football program is the intercollegiate American football team for East Tennessee State University (ETSU) located in Johnson City, Tennessee. The team was dormant from the end of the 2003 season until being reinstated for the 2015 season. They played all of their 2015 home games and all but one of their 2016 home games at Kermit Tipton Stadium before the opening of the new William B. Greene Jr. Stadium for the 2017 season. The remaining 2016 home game, against Western Carolina on September 17, was played at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway, which was already set up for football due to a game the prior week between the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. Before ETSU dropped football, it competed in NCAA Division I as a Southern Conference (SoCon) football program. The revived program played as an independent in 2015 before returning to the SoCon in 2016.
Peter C. Kuharchek was an American football coach and former player, whose coaching career spanned over 40 years at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He was the head coach for the Rhein Fire of the NFL Europe League (NFLEL) from 2001 to 2005, compiling a record of 24 wins and 28 losses. At the collegiate level, he most notably served as defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis from 1987 to 1989, and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) from 1994 through 1995. Besides his tenure in the NFLEL — which also included stints as assistant for the Orlando Thunder (1992) and Rhein Fire (1996–2000) — Kuharchek worked in four other professional leagues — including the United States Football League (USFL), Canadian Football League (CFL), Arena Football League (AFL), and United Football League (UFL). Most notably, he was the defensive coordinator for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts in 2009.
Manuel Alberto Diaz II is an American football coach who is the head football coach at Duke University. He served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Pennsylvania State University from 2022 to 2023 and as the head football coach at the University of Miami from 2019 to 2021. Diaz previously worked as the head coach for Temple University and as an assistant football coach at Mississippi State University, Louisiana Tech University, the University of Texas at Austin, Middle Tennessee State University, North Carolina State University, and Florida State University.
Jeremy Pruitt is an American football coach who most recently was a senior defensive assistant for the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the head coach at the University of Tennessee from 2018 to 2020 and defensive coordinator at the University of Alabama from 2016 to 2017, University of Georgia from 2014 to 2015, and Florida State University in 2013.
Marcus David Satterfield is an American football coach and former player. He is the tight ends coach at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln; he was previously the offensive coordinator for the 2023 season, and the first nine games of the 2024 season. Satterfield served as the head football coach at Tennessee Tech University from 2016 to 2017. He was the offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee at Martin (2006–2008), the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (2009–2012), and Temple University (2013–2014). He was an assistant coach at Richmond during the 2004 season and Western Carolina in 2005. Satterfield played college football at East Tennessee State University.
The East Tennessee State Buccaneers men's soccer team is a varsity intercollegiate athletic team of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, United States. The team is a member of the Southern Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. ETSU's first men's soccer team was fielded in 2008. The team plays its home games at Summers-Taylor Stadium on the ETSU campus. The Buccaneers were coached by Bo Oshoniyi until he was hired away by Dartmouth College. In March 2018, ETSU announced the hiring of former University of Kentucky assistant coach David Casper. Following his dismissal in 2021, David Lilly assumed the post of head coach. Lilly would go on to win the 2023 SoCon Coach of the Year award. Allen Vital was appointed as the head coach in February of 2024 following the departure of David Lilly to UAB Blazers men's soccer.
The 2017 NCAA Division I FCS football season, part of college football in the United States, was organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. The FCS Championship Game was played on January 6, 2018, in Frisco, Texas. The North Dakota State Bison beat the James Madison Dukes, 17–13, to capture their sixth title in seven years.
The 1924 East Tennessee State Normal School football team was an American football team that represented East Tennessee State Normal School—now known as East Tennessee State University (ETSU)—as an independent in the 1924 college football season. They were led by third-year head coach James Karl Luck.
Lorenzo Ward is an American football coach. He is the Special Assistant to the Head Coach at Clemson University. Ward served as the interim head football coach at the University of Louisville for the final two games of the 2018 season following the firing of Bobby Petrino. Ward played college football at the University of Alabama from 1986 to 1989.
Frank T. DeBusk is an American former college football coach and player. He was the head football coach at Tusculum University in Greeneville, Tennessee, from 1998 to 2015.
Tre Lamb is an American college football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Tulsa, a position he has held since December 2024. Lamb served as the head football coach at East Tennessee State during the 2024 season. He previously worked as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech and Mercer University.
David Blackwell is an American football coach who is currently the defensive tackles coach at the University of Missouri, a position he has held since 2023. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Old Dominion University and East Carolina University, serving as the interim head coach for the latter in 2018 after the termination of Scottie Montgomery and the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech University from 2020 to 2021.
George Quarles is an American college football coach. He is the tight ends coach at Austin Peay, a position he has held since 2024. He was the head football coach at East Tennessee State University from 2022 to 2023. Prior to East Tennessee State, he was the associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach at Furman University, where he played college football. Before he joined the Furman coaching staff, Quarles was the head coach at Maryville High School in Tennessee from 1999 to 2016, where he recorded a 250–16 record.
