Sex Gang Children are an early gothic rock and post-punk band that formed in early 1982 in Brixton in London, England. Although the original group only released one official studio album, their singles and various other tracks have been packaged into numerous collections, and they remain one of the more well-known bands of the early Batcave scene and have reformed for new albums and touring at various times since the early 1990s.

New York City's Bitter Grace performed for ten years and went through continuous rounds of line-up changes during the making of this album. Similar in vein to the sound of Joy Division, Bauhaus and other post-punk goth rockers, God and the Abyss was a long journey that lasted from the first recording in 1985 to the final release in 1997. A very dark CD as a whole, sole founder Gustavo Lapis Ahumad went through three keyboardists, two guitarists and three drummers in order to complete the album.
Shimmer is New York City's Bitter Grace's long-awaited follow up to God and the Abyss. While Shimmer did not take as long to release, seven years to the twelve it took to finish the previous, the band still underwent line-up changes through the period of recording and releasing this album, however not as severely. Both bassists recorded on this album have left the band, though one of the guitarists that has been recorded here eventually returned in late 2005 just prior to its release after a hiatus.

The Mission are an English gothic rock band formed in 1986. Initially known as The Sisterhood, the band was started by frontman Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams, soon adding drummer Mick Brown and guitarist Simon Hinkler. Aside from Hussey, the lineup has changed several times during the years and the band has been on hiatus twice.
