Blasphemy are a Canadian black metal band based in Vancouver, British Columbia that formed in 1984. [1] The band was formed initially by vocalist and occasional bassist Gerry Bull and drummer Sean Stone, known better by their respective stage names Nocturnal Grave Desecrator and Black Winds & 3 Black Hearts of Damnation and Impurity. [2] Shortly thereafter, guitarist Geoff Drakes, also known better by his pseudonym Caller of the Storms, would join the band. [2] The band formed first as "Antichrist", and would see two further name changes ("Desaster" and "Thrash Hammer", respectively) [2] before settling on Blasphemy in 1987.

The band have a reputation for violence, as well as some members being involved in criminal activity; including a member smuggling both narcotics and his girlfriend onto a commercial flight to Amsterdam, assaulting a police officer, and drug dealing. [3] Consequently, most of the members have spent time in prison. [3]

History

Blasphemy formed in 1984. The band released a demo titled "Blood Upon the Altar" in 1989 and their debut album, "Fallen Angel of Doom", [4] [5] the following year through Wild Rags, to whom they had signed to whilst touring the United States. [6] Blasphemy's second full-length studio album, 1993's "Gods of War", was released through Osmose Productions. [7] 1993 also saw Blasphemy a part of the European tour dubbed the "Fuck Christ Tour"; [8] touring alongside Immortal and Rotting Christ. [9] Nocturnal Grave Desecrator and Black Winds left the band during the first few days of the tour after experiencing problems with then bassist Ace Gustapo Necrosleezer and Vaginal Commands. For the rest of the tour, Ace replaced Nocturnal Grave Desecrator and Black Winds on lead vocals. [10]

After the "Fuck Christ Tour", Blasphemy became inactive for several years. [11] Ryan Förster, known better as Deathlord of Abomination and War Apocalypse, joined the band in 1999 as a second guitarist. [12] The band next played in July 2001 in Vancouver, with a recording of the show released as the live album Live Ritual – Friday the 13th the following year. [13]

They were inactive again until 2009, when they played two concerts; one in Montreal and one in Helsinki, in the Black Flames of Blasphemy festival, with Proclamation, Black Witchery, Revenge and Archgoat. [14] In 2010, Blasphemy headlined the second installation of the Nuclear War Now! festival in Germany.

Blasphemy's song "War Command" has been covered by Beherit and the cover appeared on Beherit's 1999 compilation album Beast of Beherit - Complete Worxxx. Blasphemy's "Winds of the Black Gods" was the opening track on the 2004 compilation Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old-School Black Metal .

Live Ritual – Friday the 13th is Blasphemy's first live album, first released in 2001 as a limited edition LP record via Nuclear War Now! The first 100 copies of the record were pressed on red vinyl and came with a bonus CD-R that contained the band's 15-track demo Die Hard Rehearsal, which was recorded at Ross Bay Studios on August 29, 2001. The album was later issued on CD, with the bonus demo, in 2002 through From Beyond Productions.

The Oath of Black Blood is a compilation album by the Finnish black metal band Beherit. The album is not a separate recording, but a compilation of the band's demo Demonomancy and EP Dawn of Satan's Millennium. The material was recorded in late 1990 and released as an album in 1991 through Turbo Music, without Beherit's permission, after the band spent the recording budget on alcohol. Spikefarm Records re-released the album in 2005 in digipak format with different artwork.

Xasthur is the project of American musician Scott "Malefic" Conner. Conner formed Xasthur in 1995 and released eight studio albums of black metal by 2010, when he announced the end of the project. However, he began using the name once again in 2015 to instead perform acoustic neofolk music. The first album with this new style was entitled Subject to Change, released in 2016.

Abominator is an Australian black/death metal band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1994. Their lyrics commonly deal with war and spirituality. They have been compared to Angelcorpse and Morbid Angel.

Archgoat is a Finnish black metal band formed in 1989 by twin brothers Ritual Butcherer on guitar and Lord Angelslayer on bass and vocals. It was one of Finland's first black metal bands along with Barathrum, Impaled Nazarene and Beherit. The members of Archgoat openly identify with the philosophy of Satanism and the occult as expressed in their lyrical content, which also consists of anti-Christian themes.

Bestial Mockery is a Swedish black metal band formed in Uddevalla, Sweden, in 1995 by the quartet of Carl "Master Motorsåg" Bildt, Micke "Doomanfanger" Petersson, Jocke "Christcrusher" and Carl "Warslaughter". The band's stated aim at that time was to "channel perverted lusts for Satanic bloody Metal". Although they split up in 2008, Bestial Mockery released four full-length albums for Metal Blood Music, Osmose and Season of Mist, as well as a large number of stand-alone EPs and shared releases with other underground metal acts. In a review of Slaying the Life in Decibel magazine, a similarity between the band and Nunslaughter was noted.
