Bodo Sperlein is a German-born designer, renowned for his deep appreciation of craft and use of high-quality materials such as bronze, wood, marble, silver, and glass to create timeless, innovative pieces. Sperlein is the creative director of his self-titled studio 'Bodo Sperlein' - a creative consultancy and luxury product design studio based in the Oxo Tower in London.[ citation needed ]

Career

Sperlein was born in Bamberg, Germany. Later, he moved to London, where he studied 3-D Design at Camberwell College of Arts (now part of the University of the Arts London). Bodo established his studio in 2000 after being awarded the Lord Sainsbury’s Scholarship and Crafts Council Grant in 1998. Alongside Bodo Sperlein Studio, he also held the position as the creative director for esteemed technology brand Loewe from 2016-2018.

In his early career, Sperlein developed a collection of tableware for Thomas Goode called Grandiflora, and a home accessory collection for fashion store Browns. Sperlein also created a collection of giftware for historic porcelain manufactures Nymphenburg, established 1747.

In 2008, Bodo was invited to participate Swarovski Crystal Wedding Project, creating table decorations inspired by the institution of marriage.

In 2016, Bodo was approached for a bespoke commission called 'Triangelis' for the Johanneskirche church in Erbach, near Frankfurt in Germany. The brief was to design a font, ambo and candle holder to be installed following the renovation of the neo-gothic church.

Bodo Sperlein Studio works with international brands including Lzf Lamps, Coordonné, Lobmeyr, Nikko, Lladró, Tane and Dibbern.

Bodo Sperlein curated and conceived an exhibition titled 'Illuminata' at the Chiesa Cristiana Protestante for Milan Design Week 2023 and the 'Menu 1' exhibition at the Sant'Angelo Monastery for Fuorisalone - Milan Design Week 2024.

Bodo’s repertoire includes collaborations and commissions across a multitude of industries, from furniture and lighting, and tableware to technology and fashion. He often works with several global, luxury brands including the LVMH Group and Dior, alongside his own product lines. His furniture collections include the Contourline and the Silva Marble collection. His ceramics and tableware collections are also featured in numerous Michelin-Star restaurants world-wide, including Le Jardinier, The Five Fields and Pied á Terre.

His designs have been featured in museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V & A) in London and Valencia Fine Arts Museum, and are in the permanent collections of design museums worldwide, including Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. Additionally, his work is represented by renowned galleries such as Les Ateliers Courbet in New York and 88 Gallery in London.

Bodo's designs consistently attract international praise from publications, including Architectural Digest, Vogue Living, Elle Decoration and Est Living.
