The 2015 presidential and parliamentary election was held in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville between 11 May and 25 May 2015. [1]

Bougainville, officially the Autonomous Region of Bougainville and previously known as North Solomons, is an autonomous region in Papua New Guinea. The largest island is Bougainville Island. The region also includes Buka Island and assorted outlying nearby islands including the Carterets. The interim capital is Buka, though it is expected that Arawa will become the permanent capital in the future. The population of the region is 249,358.

A total of 342 candidates contested the election, involving the 33 constituency seats, three seats reserved for women and three seats reserved for former combatants in the Bougainville House of Representatives and the presidency itself. [2] A total of 104,542 valid votes and 1,685 informal votes were cast. [3] The common roll included approximately 173,000 registered voters. [4]

Bougainville House of Representatives

The Bougainville House of Representatives is the legislature of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, an autonomous entity within Papua New Guinea. It was established in 2005 under Part 5 of the region's constitution, which specifies that the House of Representatives shall comprise 39 elected members in addition to the President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, currently John Momis.

Presidential election

Nine candidates contested the presidential election: incumbent President John Momis (New Bougainville Party), Nick Peniai (Bougainville Labour Party) and Sam Akoitai (Bougainville Islands Unity Party) and independent candidates Justin Pokata Kira, Sam Kauona, Peter Nerau, Simon Dumarinu, Ismael Toroama and Reuben Siara. John Momis is a politician and elected President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville of Papua New Guinea. Momis was sworn in as President of Bougainville on June 10, 2010 for a five-year term. He defeated his predecessor, President James Tanis, and five other challengers by a landslide in the 2010 presidential election, in which he was a candidate of the New Bougainville Party. He was reelected for a second period (2015–2020), in the general elections in May 2015.

New Bougainville Party (NBP) is a political party in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.

Bougainville Labour Party (BLP) is a political party in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

Momis was easily re-elected, polling a total of 51,382 votes. His nearest competitor, former rebel commander Ismael Toroama, polled 18,466 votes. [2]

Parliamentary election

The election also marked the victory of Josephine Getsi, the first woman to win an open seat in the Bougainville House of Representatives. [2]

Josephine Getsi is a politician in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. She has been a member of the Bougainville House of Representatives since 2015, representing the constituency of Peit. She nominated as an independent, but had "extensive support" from the governing New Bougainville Party. She was the first woman to win an open seat in the House. She is Minister for Community Development in the government of John Momis.
