Branch was the first seat of Branch County, Michigan, so designated in 1831. [1] The settlement and county derive their name from John Branch, then Secretary of the US Navy. [2]
The village of Mason was initially selected to be the first seat of Branch County at inauguration, however due to a procedural error the decision was declared void and the as-then unbuilt village of Branch was selected as the first seat. [3] A post office operated from 1835 to 1864. [1] The seat was moved to Coldwater in 1842 [2] and the village gradually died out.

Coldwater River is a 29.5-mile-long (47.5 km) stream in the U.S. state of Michigan. Located in Branch County, the river rises in Ovid Township at 41°50′14″N84°59′13″W as the outflow of Coldwater Lake. Flowing north and west, it is joined by the outflow from the Lake of the Woods and continues north for several miles. West of the city of Coldwater, it flows through a series of lakes: South Lake, Messenger Lake, Cemetery Lake, North Lake, Randall Lake, Morrison Lake, Craig Lake, and Hodunk Pond. It then continues to the northwest and empties into the St. Joseph River in the village of Union City at 42°03′58″N85°07′48″W.

Iyopawa Island is an island in Coldwater Lake in Michigan, United States. It is the only island in Branch County. Its coordinates are 41°48′49″N84°58′24″W, and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as 1,001 ft (305 m) in 1980. It is connected to the mainland by a land bridge, and accessible via Iyopawa Road. The island contains a nine-hole golf course, surrounded by homes and cottages.
