The Lopper Road Tunnel is a tunnel in central Switzerland. The tunnel connects Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden with Alpnach in the canton of Obwalden, and forms part of the A8 motorway. The tunnel was opened in 1984, and is 1,590 metres (5,220 ft) long. The tunnel has two lanes, and there is no central reservation. The tunnel runs under the Lopper, a shoulder of Mount Pilatus which extends into Lake Lucerne.
The Winkelried family was a Swiss noble family of Unterwalden, recorded as members of the lower nobility during the second half of the 13th century and as commoners during the 14th to early 16th centuries. The name is mostly associated with Arnold von Winkelried, the hero of the Battle of Sempach (1386) in Swiss historiography. Globi is a Swiss cartoon character occasionally referred to as Switzerland's Mickey Mouse. He is pictured as an anthropomorphic blue parrot with a yellow beak wearing a black beret and a pair of red and black checkered trousers. He was created by the Swiss cartoonist Robert Lips, as an advertising character for the Swiss department store Globus in 1932 for the company's 25th anniversary. His name was originally planned as "Kimbukku", but he was later renamed Globi after the local Basel German (Baseldytsch) dialect word for the department store that created him.
The Aare Gorge is a section of the river Aare that carves through a limestone ridge near the town of Meiringen, in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The gorge is an indirect product of glaciation; 10,000 years ago, just as the Ice Age was coming to an end, torrential runoff water from melting glaciers eroded a deep, narrow chasm through the limestone barrier. Although barely 2 kilometres (1 mi) long, this passage is bordered by sheer cliffs up to 50 m (160 ft) high on either side. The gorge varies in width from some 30 metres (98 ft) at its widest to just 1 metre at its narrowest.
The Blonay–Chamby Museum Railway is a short 3-kilometre-long (1.9 mi) steep but adhesion worked metre gauge heritage railway operated as part of the Blonay–Chamby Railway Museum using vintage steam and electric locomotives and rolling stock. The Grafenort – Engelberg Tunnel is a railway tunnel on the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg-Bahn line, which forms one portion of the Zentralbahn in Switzerland. It replaced the steepest section of the line, an inclined length of 1,600 meters that had a peak gradient of 25%, allowing for a faster transit since its completion.
The Titlis Cliff Walk is a pedestrian bridge along the cliff of Mount Titlis in the Swiss Alps. Built at around 3,000 m (9,800 ft) above sea level, it is believed to be the highest-elevation suspension bridge in Europe. It broke the record held by Salbit Bridge, also located in Switzerland. The bridge spans a distance of around 100 m (320 ft) but is just 1 m (3 ft) wide.
Stansstad railway station is a Swiss railway station in the municipality of Stansstad in the canton of Nidwalden. It is on the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line, owned by the Zentralbahn railway company, and is adjacent to the bridge that carries the line across the Alpnachersee arm of Lake Lucerne and into the Lopper II tunnel.
The Ecole d'Humanité is an international boarding school, located in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. It was founded in 1934 by Paul Geheeb and his wife Edith Geheeb Cassirer. In 1910, Geheeb had founded a similar school, the Odenwaldschule, in his native Germany, but he fled to Switzerland to found the new school after the NSDAP came to power.
The Alp is a river in the Swiss canton of Schwyz and a tributary of the Sihl. It has a length of 19.3 km (12.0 mi). The river rises on the northwestern flanks of the Brünnelistock and the northern flanks of the Kleiner and Grosser Mythen mountains near Brunni, and flows in generally northerly direction through the village of Alpthal, the village of Trachslau, the town of Einsiedeln and the village of Biberbrugg. At Biberbrugg, the river Biber joins the Alp. Some 2 km (1.2 mi) north of Biberbrugg, at Dreiwässern the Alp flows into the Sihl.
The Härzlisee is an artificial lake in Obwalden, Switzerland. It was created to serve the tourist area of Brunni.
