The Toronto Varsity Blues is the intercollegiate sports program at the University of Toronto. Its 43 athletic teams regularly participate in competitions held by Ontario University Athletics and U Sports. The Varsity Blues traces its founding to 1877, with the formation of the men's football team. Since 1908, Varsity Blues athletes have won numerous medals in Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and have also long competed in International University Sports Federation championships, Commonwealth Games, and Pan American Games.

The 2015 Pan American Games, officially the XVII Pan American Games and commonly known as the Toronto 2015 Pan-Am Games, were a major international multi-sport event celebrated in the tradition of the Pan American Games, as governed by Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). The games were held from July 10 to 26, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; preliminary rounds in certain events began on July 7, 2015. These were the third Pan American games hosted by Canada, and the first in the province of Ontario. The Games were held at venues in Toronto and seventeen other Golden Horseshoe communities. The Pan American Games and 2015 Parapan American Games were organized by the Toronto Organizing Committee for the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games (TO2015).

The Toronto Organizing Committee for the 2015 Pan Parapan American Games (TO2015) was a non-profit organization responsible for producing and financing the 2015 Pan American Games and 2015 Parapan American Games. It was established on January 21, 2010, about three months after the 2015 games were awarded to Toronto, Ontario.
Nikkita Holder is a Canadian track and field athlete of Barbadian descent who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles. Holder won the bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in her home country and city in Toronto.
Damian Warner is a Canadian athlete, specialising in decathlon and bronze medalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Warner previously won silver at the 2015 event and was a bronze medalist at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. He is the reigning Commonwealth champion from the Glasgow games and the reigning Pan American champion from the games in Toronto. Warner also holds the title to the Pan Am Games record and the Canadian record for the decathlon. Notable for his sprinting, Warner holds decathlon bests in the 100 m and 110 m hurdles, running a 10.15 and 13.44 respectively.
The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is a sports complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Owned by the City of Toronto and the University of Toronto, it is located at the northern grounds of the University's Scarborough campus near the intersection of Highway 401 and Morningside Avenue in the suburb of Scarborough. Opened to the public on September 2, 2014, the complex consists of a 3,500-seat aquatics arena with two Olympic-size swimming pools and a diving well; and a 2,000-seat field house that includes four full-sized gymnasiums, a fitness centre, a climbing wall, and a 200-metre track. The centre hosted diving, fencing, swimming, synchronized swimming and modern pentathlon competitions during the 2015 Pan American Games. Funding for the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is the largest single investment in amateur sports in the history of Canada.
York Lions Stadium is an outdoor athletics facility on the campus of Toronto's York University. It is home to the York Lions, the athletic teams of York University. The facility was primarily built for the 2015 Pan-American and Parapan American Games, where it hosted track and field events. It also hosted the opening ceremony for the 2015 Parapan American Games. During the games the venue was known as the CIBC Pan Am and Parapan Am Athletics Stadium.
Shawnacy Campbell "Shawn" Barber is a Canadian track and field athlete specialising in the pole vault. He is the former world champion in pole vault having won the event with a height of 5.90 m at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing. Barber is also the reigning Pan American Games champion winning in Toronto in 2015 with a height of 5.80 m. Barber won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as well.

Peter Steven Ogilvie is a retired Canadian sprinter who competed primarily in the 200 metres. Growing up in Burnaby, British Columbia, Peter represented Canada at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as, two outdoor, one indoor IAAF World Championships (1993), one Pan American Games (1991) and two Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 1991 Pan American Games, a gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 1994 Francophone Games in Paris, and bronze medal in the 1600m Medley Relay at the 1993 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Danielle Boyd is a Canadian sailor. Along with partner Erin Rafuse, Boyd finished in sixth place at the 2015 Pan American Games in the 49erFX. Both Rafuse and Boyd have also qualified to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
