Carel Sandon (born 29 March 1983, in Lubumbashi, Zaire) is an Italian professional lightweight boxer. He is the nephew of the WBA middleweight champion Sumbu Kalambay. Sandon, known as "Er Puma", has been a professional boxer since 2007. He has fought and won 14 matches in 4 years. [1]

Zaire, officially the Republic of Zaire, was the name of a sovereign state between 1971 and 1997 in Central Africa that is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Zaire was established following Mobutu's seizure of power in a military coup in 1965, following five years of political upheaval following independence known as the Congo Crisis. Zaire had a strongly centralist constitution, and foreign assets were nationalized. The period is sometimes referred to as the Second Congolese Republic.

He was born in the Belgian Congo, moving to Italy during his youth, which is where he learned boxing and he still resides. The Ring magazine placed him at #9 on their list of the "10 best middleweight title holders of the last 50 years" in 2011.

Weight class (boxing)

A weight class is a measurement weight range for boxers. The lower limit of a weight class is equal to the upper weight limit of the class below it. The top class, with no upper limit, is called heavyweight in professional boxing and super heavyweight in amateur boxing. A boxing match is usually scheduled for a fixed weight class, and each boxer's weight must not exceed the upper limit. Although professional boxers may fight above their weight class, an amateur boxer's weight must not fall below the lower limit. A nonstandard weight limit is called a catchweight.
