The genre was developed in the 1980s and saw a revival of popularity and influence in the late 2000s.
Regal Zonophone Records was a British record label formed in 1932, through a merger of the Regal and Zonophone labels. This followed the merger of those labels' respective parent companies – the Columbia Graphophone Company and the Gramophone Company – to form EMI. At the merger, those records from the Regal Records catalogue were prefixed 'MR' and those from the Zonophone Records catalogue were prefixed 'T'. Record releases after the merger continued using only the 'MR' prefix.

Chad & Jeremy were a British musical duo consisting of Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde, who began working in 1962 and had their first hit song in the UK with "Yesterday's Gone" (1963). That song became a hit in the United States in the following year as part of the British Invasion. Unlike the rock-music sounds of their peers, Chad & Jeremy performed in a soft, folk-inflected style that is characterised by hushed and whispered vocals. The duo had a string of hits in the United States, including "Willow Weep for Me", "Before and After", and their biggest hit, "A Summer Song". After some commercial failures and divergent personal ambitions, Chad & Jeremy disbanded in 1968.
Jarrah Records is an independent Australian record label which releases material by Western Australian-formed bands, John Butler Trio and The Waifs, and their members. In July 2002 the label was founded and co-owned by John Butler; The Waifs' members Josh Cunningham, Donna Simpson, and her sister Vikki Thorn; and the artists' common manager, Philip Stevens. Initially it was established to handle their releases for the territory of the United States by 2003 it expanded. Jarrah Records has won numerous Western Australian Music Industry Awards and was the first artist-owned independent label to debut at No.1 on the ARIA album charts.

"Sadie" sold approximately 183,000 copies in Australia and was the highest-selling Australian single until "Up There Cazaly" was released in 1979. It was also released in New Zealand, Denmark and Germany. The B-side, "In My Room", was written by Farnham. The A-side's label includes the acknowledgement "Vacuum cleaner solo: Mr. Jolly".
Park the Van Records is an American record label and management company from New Orleans, Louisiana that was formed in 2004 by Christopher Watson to release music by the band, Dr. Dog. After Hurricane Katrina, the office was moved to Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, then back to New Orleans in 2008, where the label discovered and signed Generationals. In late 2010 the label expanded services to represent independent musicians as managers, adding artists like Broncho, Scott H. Biram, and Pigeon John. In 2012 Watson left Park the Van and the label was run by co-founder Zach Fischel, Jeff Olson, and Corey Watson in Santa Monica, California. In 2017, Chris Watson returned to Park The Van, alongside Zach Fischel, Jeff Olson, and Phil Jones. The offices are split between Sacramento, Long Beach, California and London, UK.
