The James River District (JRD) is a high school athletic conference of the Virginia High School League with most schools based in the Southside Virginia region. All of the James River District schools are relatively small with enrollments under 1,000. The schools in the James River District compete in A Region B with the schools of the A Bull Run District, A Dogwood District, and the A Shenandoah District.

The A Cumberland District is a high school conference of the Virginia High School League which draws its members from the western part of Southwest Virginia. The schools in the Cumberland District compete in A Region D with the schools of the A Black Diamond District and the A Lonesome Pine District.

The Clinch Mountain District was a district of the Virginia High School League. The league's mission was to establish and maintain "standards for student activities and competitions that promote education, personal growth, sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship." The secondary schools within the district compete in various events, predominantly athletics. The district was formed as part of a comprehensive redistricting plan to balance the four regions competing in Groups A and AA.

Virginia High School is a high school located in Bristol, Virginia. In 1999, Virginia High started offering the Tri-Cities area's first International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Classes from the Advanced Placement program are also offered to help students who are headed to college. A career and technical wing was added to the main school building to help students who wish to go into a trade straight from high school. Courses offered for this path include: culinary arts, cybersecurity, engineering and manufacturing, coding, business, horticulture, auto-mechanics, building trades, and nursing.

Bull Run District is a 2A athletic district under the Virginia High School League (VHSL).
