Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design

The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD) is a higher education initiative that seeks to advance higher education through design.

CETLD was created in 2005, a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)-funded partnership between the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts and Architecture, the Royal College of Art, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

The centre was established as a five-year project, developed to enhance learning and teaching in design through research that brings together resources and expertise from Higher Education and collections-based partners.

Its objectives included the advance of understanding, practice-based learning, interdisciplinarity in design education, student voice and student-centred approaches to learning, use and application of collections.

The Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning respond to the British Department of Education and Science and the Department for Education and Employment visions for "purposefully linking learning institutions and providers--including universities, libraries, museums and galleries--in the development of a `learning society.'"

There are 74 British national Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Advance HE is a British professional membership scheme promoting excellence in higher education. Advance HE advocates for evidence-based teaching methods and awards fellowships as a method of professional recognition for university teachers. The HEA was responsible for the UK Professional Standards Framework for higher education practitioners. On 21 March 2018, the HEA merged with the Leadership Foundation and the Equality Challenge Unit to form Advance HE. "The merger of the Equality Challenge Unit, the Higher Education Academy and the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education followed the recommendations of the Bell Review for a single sector agency for equality and diversity, learning and teaching, and leadership and governance in higher education." The HEA had premises in York Science Park, Heslington. Its work is continued by Advance HE, which now operates the Higher Education Academy's professional membership scheme.

The National Student Survey is an annual survey, launched in 2005, of all final year undergraduate degree students at institutions in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom. Practice-based professional learning (PBPL) is understood in contrast to classroom- or theory-based learning. It is kindred to terms such as work-based learning, workplace or work-centred learning. The Engineering Subject Centre (EngSC) was one of 24 subject centres within the Higher Education Academy from 2000 to 2011. The Academy encouraged, supported and enabled teaching excellence in the United Kingdom higher education community. This was achieved through development of research and evaluation both for the higher education (HE) community as a whole and through the discipline-specific expertise of the subject centres. The stated aim of the Academy is: "to improve the learning experience for students".

It is located within the University of Brighton Grand Parade campus in the heart of Brighton and is an international research resource.
