The Ceylon Malay Youth League was a Malay youth organization in Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka). The organization was founded in 1957, and was active for about 15 years. [1] Kartini Mohamed, the daughter of M.P. Drahaman, served as the president of the Ceylon Malay Youth League. [2] [3] The organization published the journal Suara Pemuda Malay ('Voice of Malay Youth'). [4]

Sri Lankan Malays ethnic group

Sri Lankan Malays (also known in Sinhalese language as Ja Minissu meaning Javanese – a catch-all term historically used for all natives of the Malay Archipelago – are an ethnic Malays who reside in Sri Lanka. They number approximately 40,000, and make up 0.20% of the Sri Lankan population. Sri Lankan Malays first settled in the country when both Sri Lanka and Indonesia were Dutch colonies, i.e. during Dutch Ceylon, while a second wave came from the Malay Peninsula, when both Malaya and Sri Lanka were in the British Empire.

Sri Lankan Moors are an ethnic minority group in Sri Lanka, comprising 9.3% of the country's total population. They are mainly native speakers of the Tamil language with influence of Sinhalese and Arabic words. They are predominantly followers of Islam.

Sri Lankan Creole Malay is an Austronesian creole language formed through a mixture of Sinhala and Shonam, with Malay being the major lexifier. Sri Lankan Malay is a restructured vernacular of Malay base spoken by at least five different communities in Sri Lanka which has evolved to be significantly divergent from other varieties of Malay due to intimate contact with the dominant languages of Sinhala and Tamil. Sri Lankan Creole Malay originated as a means of communication between the incoming Malays and the Sri Lankan people in the 13th century. It is now exclusively spoken by Sri Lankan Malays, whose ancestry include exiles and labourers from Indonesia brought by the Dutch and British, as well as soldiers in the Dutch garrison. The majority of the speakers today reside in Northern Colombo. Sri Lankan Malays now constitute 0.3% of the Sri Lankan population, which is approximately 46,000 people.The exact number of speakers is unknown and there are no linguistic statistics available on the number of speakers living in or outside Sri Lanka. Based on the ethnic statistics of Sri Lankan Malays, the estimation of the number of Sri Lankan Creole Malay speakers is between 30,000 to 40,000.

Deshamanya Marhoom Al Haj Mohammed Abdul Bakeer Markar was a Sri Lankan politician. He was the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and Governor of the Southern Province.

Dr Mohamed Purvis Drahaman was a Ceylonese Malay medical doctor and politician. He was the leader of the All Ceylon Malay Congress, and was appointed as Member of Parliament in 1956 and 1960.

It is the highest national honour for arts, culture and drama in Sri Lanka. It is conventionally used as a title or prefix to the awardee's name. Kala Keerthi ranks lower than Vidya Jyothi.

Alamat Lankapuri was a Malay language fortnightly publication in Jawi script, issued from Colombo, Ceylon. Alamat Lankapuri was first published in June 1869. It was the first Jawi script Malay-language newspaper printed worldwide. The newspaper was printed by lithograph.

Abdul Aziz was an Indian-born Ceylonese politician and trade unionist. He was elected to the first Parliament of Ceylon in March 1950 representing the Ceylon Indian Congress as the member for the Maskeliya electorate, at a parliamentary by-election, following the death of the sitting member, G. R. Motha.

Great Malay Nusantara is a literary association in Malaysia. Founded in 2011 on the initiative of the famous Malaysian poet, S.E.A. Write Award winner, Malaysian National Laureate Ahmad Kamal Abdullah. The goal of the organization is to promote the Malay language and Malay literature in the world, to develop contacts and cooperation between the writers of Nusantara countries.
