Dune Messiah is a science fiction novel by American writer Frank Herbert, the second in his Dune series of six novels. A sequel to Dune (1965), it was originally serialized in Galaxy magazine in 1969, and then published by Putnam the same year. Dune Messiah and its own sequel Children of Dune (1976) were collectively adapted by the Sci-Fi Channel in 2003 into a miniseries entitled Frank Herbert's Children of Dune.
Paul Atreides is a fictional character in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. Paul is a prominent character in the first two novels in the series, Dune (1965) and Dune Messiah (1969), and returns in Children of Dune (1976). The character is brought back as two different gholas in the Brian Herbert/Kevin J. Anderson novels which conclude the original series, Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007), and appears in the prequels Paul of Dune (2008) and The Winds of Dune (2009). According to Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert's son and biographer, House Atreides was based on the heroic but ill-fated Greek mythological House Atreus.
Chani is a fictional character featured in Frank Herbert's novels Dune (1965) and Dune Messiah (1969). Known mainly as the Fremen wife and legal concubine of protagonist Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides, Chani is the daughter of Imperial Planetologist Liet-Kynes and his Fremen wife Faroula, and later the mother of the twins Ghanima and Leto II Atreides. The character is resurrected as a ghola and appears in Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007), Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's novels which complete the original series.
Ghanima Atreides is a fictional character from the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. Born at the end of Dune Messiah (1969), Ghanima is a central character in Children of Dune (1976). She also appears as a child in the Brian Herbert/Kevin J. Anderson prequel The Winds of Dune (2009).
Princess Irulan is a fictional character and member of House Corrino in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. She first appears in Dune (1965), and is later featured in Dune Messiah (1969) and Children of Dune (1976). The character's birth and early childhood are touched upon in the Prelude to Dune prequel trilogy (1999–2001) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, and she is a principal character in the Herbert/Anderson series Heroes of Dune (2008–2009). Irulan has also appeared in all film and television adaptations of Herbert's Dune works.
Sandworms of Dune is a science fiction novel by American writers Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, the second of two books they wrote to conclude Frank Herbert's original Dune series. It is based on notes left behind by Frank Herbert for Dune 7, his own planned seventh novel in the Dune series. The novel was released on August 7, 2007.

Phobaeticus is a genus of Asian stick insects comprising over 25 species. It includes some of the longest known insects, including Phobaeticus chani.
Phobaeticus kirbyi is a very long stick insect native to Borneo. The holotype deposited at the Natural History Museum in London measures 328 mm (12.9 in) excluding legs and 546 mm (21.5 in) including legs. This makes it the second-longest known insect in terms of body length, behind Phobaeticus chani with 357 mm (14.1 in). Both P. chani and Phobaeticus serratipes exceed it in total length with legs extended. However, recent specimens of P. kirbyi have only reached 283 mm (11.1 in) in body length.
Phobaeticus chani or Chan's megastick is a species of stick insect in the tribe Pharnaciini. It is one of the longest insects in the world and was once considered the record-holder. One specimen held in the Natural History Museum in London measures 567 mm (22.3 in). This measurement is, however, with the front legs fully extended. The body alone still measures an impressive 357 mm (14.1 in).

This species can be distinguished by its absence of a pad of densely distributed setae on its first pereopod, the anterior branchial margin which bears two spines, and the carpus of its first pereopod carrying only two spines.

Medusablennius is a monotypic genus of combtooth blenny, its only member being Medusablennius chani, which is known only from a single reef in the Tuamotu Archipelago. It was recorded from surge channels in tidal flats. This species is characterised by having numerous cirii on its head which is why Springer gave named the genus after the gorgon Medusa, while the specific name honours William L. Chan who noted that the type was likely to be a species new to science.
